Bluegill and crappie action on Puckaway

Set out on some fishing trips chasing panfish on the canals on Lake Puckaway the last 3 days. The ice was about 3 inches thick and the first day we had no snow cover on the thin ice. The fish were pretty spooky with the clear ice in some areas. One little trick for helping when you have thin clear ice is to splash some water and the slush around your hole once and while when its cold and it will freeze in a cloudier film on top to help conceal your self.
The ares we were fishing was about 2 foot depths in some of the canals that are around the lake. The water is jin clear and you can site see the fish most of the time. What a blast to see how many fish are down there around your jigs. The jigs we were using are small horizontal jigs with the little mamooska in the yellow and greens my favorite. We tipped the jigs with spikes and wax worms for the days out.

The bite was the best when the clouds came in and friday we had a nice snow storm that rolled in and the bite was pretty fast before dark. The panfish bite seemed to the best with the falling pressure for the days as well. On weds. the sun was out and the best way to draw the active fish was to be jigging it steady and pausing it when they shoewd up. Some of the crappies and bigger gills would come in just under the ice and ponce on the jig.

Over all we had some good fishing the last 3 days with the different weather patterns coming in. We got gills, crappies, perch and some largemouth bass as well and saw a couple of northerns done the holes also. Great to be on the ice again!

  1. Nothing like some fresh panfish this time of year. Next week maybe cold enough to make some ice for the eyes.
