Attention pool 4 anglers. Don’t be stupid. You will kill every fish pulled from 75′ of water. Yesterday, we counted over 50 dead fish floating down river and at all times there were boats stacked in the deadly deep water, Don’t do it! I know it’s tempting cause you can catch fish there, but they are mostly non keeper dinks. Please and thank you! Don’t be stupid stay out of the nursery and let them grow!

50 Floating fish … nothing worth that IMHO

Maybe some educational postings around the area would help

So, what I hear you saying is that they need to eliminate the 15′ size limit on Pool 4?

just let them spawn out before the season opens and there would not be a problem

No most of these fish are saugers being caught. No size limit on them.

What’s the difference if they die before they spawn this year or before they spawn next year?

If you want to fish the scour holes just keep everything you catch. Plain & simple. Better to just leave it alone in my opinion.

Plenty of fish to be caught downstream 100 yards from there guys in 14-24ft of water.

Might not catch as many, but there’s something to be said about quality over quantity.

Sounds like bigger fish as well down further.

Hey, catfish need and carp need to eat too! And after they feed on those dead carcases they will grow up big and string and be able to eat big sauger and walleye…that are alive. How’s that for a deterrent?

Why don’t the DNR put a rope in blocking it to fishing? Do they not care? Do MN and WI disagree on it? Would the rope meander all over and get into places where it is safe to fish?

Well mplsplug it’s like this. In IA the DNR has concluded in their infinite wisdom that fishing sauger in the deep holes under a dam has no effect on the sauger population. Case in study dubuque dam.

However as an uneducated fisheman (no fancy fisheries degree) it seems to me that simple counting of dead fish downstream as stated above does mean an impact has occurred….

    Yep
Kinda frustrating when seemingly you just stated the obvious, and all you get is a blank stare and ….nope no impact….2+2 does not = 4

Maybe it is just a matter of educating people….. There will be some that simply do not care (and that sucks), but many, if told that these fish are all dying would hopefully change their fishing location. Maybe a simple flyer with good info handled out as boats launch at Everts? Maybe local bait shops as minnows are sold, being a lot of these guys are probably using meat.

I’d hope a lot of the guys on this forum already know about fishing over 30′ of water. I keep reading about guys doing it on Madison area lakes for perch… pulling them out of 50′ water and putting them back down. Drop a camera down and you can see all the small dead perch.

    This post should be titled…

75′ kills almost all the walleyes.
50′ kills many of the walleyes.
30′ kills a significant number of walleyes.

With every bait purchase in the spring/fall Everet’s could hand out a flyer that shows the mortality of walleye at depth that was posted in the “prespawn hooking mortality” thread. I’m guessing that most those dudes in the scour hole are running live bait and then they could make an educated decision. Just a thought.

Perhaps they should think twice before biting a jig in deep water!!! Stupid fishes!!!

Hypothetically if they moved the refuge line past the Scour Hole, can this body of water still handle this much pressure? I’ve only been coming down here for 3 years but I would have to say this year has been by far the busiest. There are weekend caliber crowds during the middle of the week.

I think having Everts handing out a flyer would be a great idea and in their best interest.

I wonder if tossing back fish that will die constitutes wanton waste?

I don’t think it is a matter of underestimation. I think it is plain greediness. People don’t seem to care about the fishery anymore.

As much as I hate to say it, I honestly feel the walleye/saugers season needs to be shut down on pool 4 during the winter/spring.

Flyer idea sounds good but I’d worry about papers flying around. Maybe just a prominent sign in the bait shop. And other locations. Heck. Put a big sign on the bank etc.

After the DNR finished it’s last study of hooking saugers out of the deep water, Everts did in fact hand out flyers. Four maybe 5 years ago.

    Did it make a difference?

Kind of reminds me of draining trailers when pulling out of the water on freezing days. There is a red and white sign on the ramp.

BK is right for the most part. But moving the no fishing zone further downstream and hand out tickets would require the DNR to take action.

So in all reality yes we’re back to flyers…

90 percent of the people fishing in that hole know exactly what’s happening to those fish, they just dont care.

I think a sign or flyer that educates people on this would help. So would a ticketing effort from the DNR related to wanton waste. I hope the spring season is never closed on the river, but greedy people could ruin it for the rest of us.

I totally agree — I know that more education won’t totally solve the problem, but it might help a little.

Scour holes, for those who don’t know how to catch fish any other way.
