Suzuki Problem

It seems Suzuki has gotten some pretty solid nods on these forums. My friend has now had quite the opposite scenario.

He has a 1 year old 90hp Suzuki on his Alumacraft. On an outing last week it started making a slight ticking sound. The guy is beyond careful with his equipment, toys, etc. He gave the certified Suzuki mechanic a call and they thought it might be some type of spark issue or perhaps even the fuel pump. With the busy time of the year, fast forward to today. My buddy got the phone call that the #4 cylinder was severely scored, to the point it was only compression testing around ~40#. He will get a full replacement via warranty but was told approximately 2 months he’d be without it due to “Covid related issues”

The motor has 19 hours on it with just minutes near WOT and a certified Suzuki mechanic winterizing it and stored in a heated garage.

For a guy who takes extremely good care of his stuff, he’s pissed. As soon as he takes it on replacement, it will be up for sale.

As I am shopping boats currently, I have been favoring Yamaha, while one of the dealers I have been talking to has been telling me Suzuki is a fine motor and saves me a little money over Yamaha… I have been skeptical, mainly because I have had it in my head my next will have a yamaha for a few years now. Thus story makes me think maybe I should buy the Suzuki… Good to know that the only time I have heard of a bad suzuki, they are covering it 100%. Other than being down for 2 months during prime time, I am not sure what there is to be pissed about. Sounds like your buddy bought a boat from a great dealer that has him covered in case something goes wrong. Now, if the dealer and suzuki said something along the lines of not being covered due to improper care or negligence… there would be something to be pissed about. Care to share what dealer is taking care of him?

Of course it’s covered under warranty, it’s new. Let me know what the boat is I might be a buyer when he gets the replacement. Suzuki doesn’t scare me a bit, had them before.

Only real issue with Suzuki are there are not very many dealers that sell them or are certified to work on them. If you have a good dealer close to you it shouldn’t be a problem. If ever on a trip and have an issue there is a reasonable chance finding a mechanic or even parts close.

He’s actually having the work done at a place other than the dealer (still certified) as the dealer told him it’d be even longer.

I’m calling BS to anyone who says “I’m not sure what they’re is to be pissed about”. The guy spent good money for a brand new boat and outboard. Just because the warranty is rightfully honored after 1 year and less than 20 hours of use doesn’t mean everything is dandy. He’s out of a boat until August because of a defective product.

There is no such thing as bullet proof, if you never had a good product that you have happen to get a bad one, then you are one lucky son of a gun

Doesn’t matter what brand, this time of year, it will be weeks before your motor can even be looked at, parts and delivery because of the virus, more delay. I was down 4 weeks on my verado, Suzuki have been bulled proof for me , but things can go wrong with anything

    cheers

I would be more pissed at the dealer for not providing a temporary loaner if my motor was going to be unusable all summer .

Suzuki owner for 12 years 2 different motors zero problems, Love my Suzuki DF115. Lets talk about what causes scored cylinder walls. Lack of oil getting to it, something contamination left in there when building? What causes this problem?

Not an oil or cleanliness issue or you would see it on all the cylinders. Scoring is typically from too much heat. Most probable cause is a lean condition.

doesn’t sound like a Suzuki problem to me. sounds like a fluke issue that happened to take place with a Suzuki motor. of course your buddy has a right to be pissed. I would be too and would probably not be thinking highly of Suzuki either at the moment but honestly that could have happened with a mercury or Yamaha or Evinrude….

My Chevy had cylinder shut down issues and the engine was replaced at 90k miles. Does that mean that all Chevys are garb?
