Which Great Lake for Bass?

So a few of my friends and I are trying to plan a Great Lakes trip sometime in June. The focus of our trip will be bass, LM or SM. So far we are considering Superior, Michigan, or Erie. Keep in mind that none of us have fished these lakes specifically for these species. And I have only caught SM on Erie while fishing for eyes.

Any suggestions as to which lake to pick and as to what areas would be good that time of year? This would obviously play a role as to where we would try to get lodging.

    Thanks,

    FDR

thats an easy one. Head up to Sturgeon Bay. Tons of fish, plenty of lodging and a heck of a lot closer than Erie. If you make that your destination, feel free to PM me and i’d be happy to get you started in the right direction.

    Ditto,

Lots of options in the area and you should be able to find a place to fish in all conditions.

If you are not totally set on the Great Lakes then you might want to consider Mille Lacs. The smallmouth fishing on Mille Lacs is world class.

Just take a look around the Mille Lacs bass forum here on IDO. Here is a link to the forum. Lake Mille Lacs Bass Forum

Sturgeon Bay is a great fishery, but do not forget Chequamegon Bay. Plenty of huge smallies

If you want a few starting areas, PM me.

Without question, for a first time Great Lakes trip, I would go to Door County. Stourgon Bay is very good, but there are many places that are much better that are only a few miles up the road.

I will definately be going back to the Detroit River/Lake Erie for the monsters in there. It took me a couple days to get a steady pattern together. But the quality/quantity of 4#+ fish was awsome.

PM me and I can give you more places to try. Memorial day weekend is usually the spawn if you want to catch a hundred bedded fish.

Nothing like a top water bite over 30 fow in mid-june!

    Plus the sheepshead are fun!

Holy Crap. I am starting to get the shakes. Does Lake Michigan get a may fly hatch that really slows down the fish? If so, do you have a general time frame for it?

    Thanks,

Sturgeon Bay is definitely a good pick. However, if your trip is scheduled for early June you will probably get stuck popping bucks off of beds. Sure this is a blast, but it’s easy to overlook the big ones.

I am a big fan of Lake Erie and St.Clair. You can load the boat with giants if you time it right.

Since the subject is on the Great Lakes, don’t forget Lake Huron. Sounds goofy, but don’t be fooled. I know for a fact that Westly Strader was catching 5 pounders there during an FLW tourney…
