I am close to pulling the trigger on a 08′ WX1790 and would like to hear some reviews from the guys who own/owned one. Pros/Cons, rod storage, and overall opinion on this particular rig. Thanks in advance!

I didn’t own one, but we filmed a show on the Rainy River out of a 1790. I thought it was a nice boat with a very nice open floor plan.
May 5, 2011 at 1:34 pm #963571Never fished out of one but have seen many around. They look very nice and laid out. Not to mention its skeeter whats not to like.
May 5, 2011 at 1:50 pm #963580I had a 2004 model and my dad has an 03 with the VTS(variablle trolling speed) on the motor. Very good boat. It fishes/tracks really well in all conditions, rough water to calm. You can comfortably fish 3 guys in this boat. Storage is very plentiful throughout the boat for rain gear, tackle and misc fishing gear. Center rod storage is great also, along with side rod storage for longer trolling rods for example, I believe up to 9′. 2 smaller coolers that could be used for storage as well, front bait well to hold anything wet like drift sock when not full of bait. Its fiberglass so the ride is very smooth, I think on average I saw 32 mph with the 75hp tiller.
I have one major down falls with this boat..Is putting gas in the boat. For some reason when I put gas in the tank the tank needs to “burp” prior to accepting gas with any speed at the pump, it will literally spit gas back up the opening and spill in the splash well. Once the tank “burps” I can run the pump wide open and works flawlessly. I have had times where it takes a long time to put just a few gallons of gas in. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the way the boat sits on the trailer attached to my truck or what the deal is, but its some times frustrating and messy with gas coming up out of the tank while trying to fill. For the money in my opinon this is the best tiller on the market. If I was looking for another tiller I would buy another skeeter. Great boat
May 5, 2011 at 1:54 pm #963582I have owned one since 03. I like the storage spaces, the appearance and everything else that goes with the boat.
The only problem I have is when it comes to putting fuel in. It will not take fuel until it ‘burps’ gas out of the filler. I’ve had the floor off to see if there was a problem with the gas tank or line. Everything looked normal to me. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem? Takes a lot of paper towels to wipe up gas. Never had it checked out by a dealer.
Otherwise it is a great boat.May 5, 2011 at 2:00 pm #963584Quote:

I had a lund that did this. My fix was taking the kink out of the hose leading to the gas tank vent. A good dealer should be able to diagnose / fix this for you.
May 5, 2011 at 3:41 pm #963628Thanks for the input dudes, my handle Rangerski doesn’t come from the boat, it’s from the tab:-). Would like the 2000 but for the $ and maybe 20 hours on this 1790 I can’t pass it up. Excited to see what a Skeeter has to offer!
May 5, 2011 at 5:29 pm #963688I have 2004 1790t.
I also have the gas problem.
The boat does ride and fish well but there are a few things I scratch my head and say “Why the hell did they do it that way?”
The fuse panel is impossible to get at. Find a new place to mount your electronics. The box is small and too far back.
Get yourself a long handled scoop net for getting fish out of the livewell. It runs back under the electronic box and its hard to get fish out without getting a wet sleeve.
Although there is plenty of storage for a 17 1/2 foot boat, the storage isnt dry.
I can get 6 1/2 ft rods in the center rod box. I put my longer rods in the side compartments with rod socks so they dont get tangled.
Its been a good boat and the motor has been flawless.
Its time for Skeeter to redo the inside layout though.
If they did, I’d buy another one.
May 5, 2011 at 7:21 pm #963718I have a 05 and don’t have the problem with the gas tank. I can’t say enough good things about it. For a 17′ boat I would put it against any 18′ boat out there right now and I have been in all of them (tillers). I like the layout. I mounted my electronics outside the locker also and it works great. Make sure and get the vts on the Yamaha.
