Has anyone seen the Box off a cube van used for an Ice house?

Ive been looking for an old junker just for the box and I would think that be a great shell for conversion/ Solid airtght, the door would need to be retrofitted but no big deal, just a frame needed and inurds. Cant imagine be that heavy if any thing lighter than the customs out there I would think.

24ft van box for a bit over $1000.

van box Got the Ice caste half made and a bit more durable.

Any idea what that would weigh? In high school my buddy had one of the old postal jeeps. We took a sawzall and cut a few holes in the floor to ice fish through.

Not sure how heavy the box would be, but I have a 25′ box on the back of my truck with a lift gate when I had a flat tire, my 3 and a half ton jack couldn’t lift it to change the rear tire. I think they are heavier than you think.

Could be heavy that’s for sure. They look so deceivingly simple and light.
I wouldn’t go with something so long but it’s an idea I’d like to look into.

Years ago I drove an old 14 fter econoline and the shell was just mounted on an I-b frame, seemed to be pretty light as the 6 cylinder had no problem powering it. What I liked about it is used the full 102″ allowed for the road made it feel wide.

I did some checking and a 24′ box should weigh in the 4000lbs range.

Hard to believe to be the average. My Stake box/dump box weighed 17000# rated at 32000# GVW Average commercial cube van is rated at 17,000 to 24000 GVW. Then you take ones simple 14ft cube van that is not rated for DSL it is going to be lighter yet. Some one has to do the math that not all is equal.

Like I said I am not looking at the heavy duty stuff.

The walls and roof are not going to be heavy it is the floor that weighs a lot. I don’t remember the specific wood that they use on the floor but it is very durable and resistant to the weather, chemicals. The metal is aluminum and then there is steel track that ususlly runs the length of the box on both sides usually one track that is about 3 foot off of the floor and another one about 5 feet. It can be removed fairly easily to reduce weight. You would want to put your own frame under it to get the floor closer to the ice and reduce weight. Just a guess but I think a 24 foot cube without the load bar track, floor, and frame would weigh about 1500 to 2000 pounds. I think it is a good idea to use one.

I had big dreams this summer of building an ice shack to pull from lake to lake. I ran out of time and cash. Check with your local salvage yard for semi-tractor sleeper cabs. They are mostely aluminum and fiberglass to lighten a trucks weight to meet weight restrictions. Some models come with beds and closets already in them. Mount the sleeper on an axil or special built trailer and you got a good start. 3-4 holes in the floor with risers, a heater, trailer lights, and GAME ON.

See if you can find a old walk in cooler. Think you could heat those with a candle. Much lighter to.
