Congrats to my Search and Destroy team member Mike Sapp for landing an accidental encounter with this MONSTER “SKI”

Will get a full story of the event soon. Stripped ALL the line out of our Frabill insulated round, and only had one of the quick set rig hooks from Bigtooth tackle on the bottom of her mouth. UNREAL FIGHT AND PHOTO OPP!!

I simply cannot get enough fishing in this weather!! Was a great day prior to this chance encounter.

Fish measured 45 inches on the beans and was an estimated 27-30lbs. Quite a hand over hand battle to say the least.

way2 go chris! love2 see pics of muskies from rainey…i mean there’s no muskies in there right?? haha

i’ve always wanted2 bring my boat up in the summer and target these ski’s since it seems nobody else really targets them…i know there is a low population and that some areas of the lake are better than others. how many muskies have u caught or seen since you’ve been up there?? would it be worth a try? 1thing i have learned is lakes with lower populations of musky hold HUGE fish!

thanks for sharing the pics and keep them coming!

I’m very excited to have been able to take part in bringing that fish topside. When Mike made his way to the flag it was like the theme song of the “Chariots of Fire” was streaming through my head. I watched him running full stride towards that little orange flag that looked out of place in the white backdrop. From a distance I watched Mike slowly lift the Frabill round from the hole and thought it was funny he didn’t dump the fish a little line; Rather he lifted the flag and drove the hook home. Then again it was odd as the fish seemed to have him at a standstill. Come to find out that the big ole “Ski” had already spooled our flag, so the initial tug of war was truly on like “Donkey Kong”. I watched intently from a distance until it became obvious this was a large fish that deserved an audience. Mike and crew smoothly delivered a precise tag team effort being cautious not to give too much tension while keeping the miles of spare line free from the ice during human drag peel outs. The fight lasted about 20 minutes as I laid face first on the ice peering down the hole just hoping to get a mere glimpse of what we were hooked up with. 10 minutes into the fight I got my first glimpse of an extremely large fish dart by the hole and things got very intense. I honestly didn’t know if it was by chance a Muskie or a 30lb Pike!! Either way this was an epic battle that would test every ounce of our equipment and ability for certain. There would clearly be no room for error on this encounter. I looked at my buddy Mike and said “MIKE……THAT is the largest fish I’ve locked eyes on under the ice!!”. This of course brought the intensity level of our crew to a whole new level. I assure you with the amount of fishing we do that is a quite rare statement. The Muskie had one of the quick set trebles fron the Big Tooth Tackle Company under her front jaw and one towards her pectoral fin making a turn up the hole very intense. NOTHING inside her mouth. As I laid face first in the snow trying to figure out how this was going to work I questioned the value of my right hand; Afterall we’ve been quite close for several years, and I was not certain I wanted to put it close to the meatgrinder with fins. I’ve never questioned puting a body part in harms way when it came to a elite caliber fish, but I honestly thought hard about it at that particular moment. The simple mass of the head on that fish had me both laughing and shaking my head at the same time as I found myself talking my way through what we were going to try accomplish. We ended up scrambling for the the Frabill scooper and sort of wedging it under her jaw and twisting her up the hole to infamous glory. The first time of course she saw the scoop and bolted like a rocket as ice shards pelted everyone within close proximity. When we finally centered her massive head up the hole her shoulders and belly needed to be literally squeezed up a 8 inch hole as I kept saying keep her coming keep her coming!!!!!. I slid my hand under her gill plate careful not to get into the red and from that moment on it was simply ICE MADNESS. We quickly took pics and had her facing south again. I’m happy to report she not only gave Mike and the crew quite a thrill, but she’s alive and well for another angler someday. I’m sure her feelings were hurt a bit losing the competitive tug of war battle to Mike, but I’m confident she’ll quickly be back on the attack mode as king of the waters on Rainy Lake.

Again KUDOS Mike! As I often say……Time on Big fish waters = Big fish. Another Rainy Lake PB and in all honesty considering this came by chance through the ice; This was probably the most exciting encounter I’ve had in my personal fishing career!!

More pics to come!! Thanks to all that have shared in this excitement for all of us ESPECIALLY MY GOOD BUDDY MIKE!! I couldn’t be more happy for him.

    Few more pics!!

Coming from a Big Pike fisherman; The mass of this Muskie truly has taken me back a bit. We catch our share of big pike usually putting 50-70 pike over 10lbs on the board each season. Although we field several inquries frankly I’ve YET to personally target Muskie on Rainy Lake during our open season as I simply have limited available time to ignite a new passion. Still this chance encounter has the fishing addicted in me getting a bit shakey!! Last year we CPR’d a 25lb/46.5 inch Pike. That fish caught by our customer Shawn was truly massive, but had more fat versus what I’d say was simply muscle on this particular “Ski”. This fish was thick from Head to tail. Peering through the pics again I’m shaking my head as I compare Mike’s hands versus the Muskie’s Tail and Head.

Should another angler be as fortunate as Mike was to have the thrill of a lifetime on an accidental encounter with such an elite caliber fish please keep this in mind. PICS are great and the pics will allow this memory to forever be captured in Pixels. Still take quality photos fast and get that fish back in the water immediately. I also can’t stress enough the importance of anglers utilizing the quick set rigs on big baits. The quick set rigs like the ones we use from Big Tooth Tackle company have greatly increased our hooking percentages while drastically decreasing gut hooked fish. That in my book is WIN/WIN!! It’s both a responsible and effective method employed for big pike that we’ve religously called upon for several years.

Lastly I’ve included a pic of Shawns 46.5 inch Pike that tipped the scales at 25lbs 4oz. Though the fish was indeed about 1.5 inches longer there is little doubt the “Ski” wins the battle of the “LBS”.

    U DA MAN MIKE!! UDAMAN!!

BTW……The next time I’m face down in the snow peering down the hole and say these words; THAT is the biggest fish I’ve EVER seen…….BE AFRAID!

Awessome fish Mike. It was great to be there to witness first hand. With the team of guys making sure the line would not get tangled when she ran, you could call it ” The Greatest Show On Ice”

My good buddy who also is a full-time guide has tried to get me slinging the big junk before, and I’ve always said I can’t find the time for another addiction.
