I drive by my friends every day and I never “see them”.. because I am consentrating on what I am doing.. maybe AL was doing the same.. when I am fishing.. I don’t see other boats, and some times , never even hear them show up.. and suddenly there is some one fishing very near me..

when you are really fishing , you don’t see anything.. but what you are doing.. the only time I see people, is when I am traveling..

In 1998 the wife, boys and myself stopped by In-Fisherman headquarters on our way to a resort in northern MN. We are all huge fans of the Lindners. Our sons were 10 and 12 at the time. They were closed so we just kind of wondered around looking at the grounds and their boats. A black Suburban came roaring into the driveway and it was Al. He got out of his vehicle, visted with our family, asked what lake we were headed to and if we needed any advice on that lake. He also took a photo with our family and had his arms around our boys. We had a unique Christmas card that year, but the nonfisherman in the family probably wondered who the heck that other guy was. We still have a framed 8X10 on our entertainment center. Al is truly a class act and he made that vacation a special one for our family. Thanks Al

There was another guy in the boat with him that was very friendly cheering me on while netting eyes for dad. Yet not a word from Al maybe I caught him on a bad day I’ll never know. Maybe he couldn’t hear me 30ft away saying over and over DAD THAT’S AL LINDER!

Not sure when Al quit drinking, but maybe it was after that and he didn’t see or hear you because all he could hear in his head was the pounding of his hangover. Who knows really. Facebook friend him and ask him if he remembers being an to a 12 year old boy back a few beers, I mean years ago.

That must be why I have been run into a few times down on pool#4. They were so into the fishing zone they failed to notice my boat.

I figured Al being a man of god-da, he would be able to at least give a nod to a fan, especially a kid.

He also could have been using the opportunity to teach the kid not to have false idols.

That’s one of the commandments, isn’t it?

I don’t think thats a fair thing to say..

again.. who knows what discussion was going on in the boat.. it could have been a major business decision.. just fishing concentration.. whatever..

There is a Rick Clunn story, told by his first wife.. and She says that once Rick is fishing, and in a fishing mode, she litterally had to grab him to notice the kids waiting to talk to him.. NOT BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WANT TO TALK TO THEM, but because he was concentrating so much on what HE WAS DOING.. and still in the mode at weigh in..

again.. I am fishing.. throwing a jig or what not.. I am looking at my line.. feeling for a hit.. nine times out of ten.. I look up and there are three boats around me, that I never “saw” come into my area..

its like when I learned to play craps.. the guy told us.. don’t look at what the others are doing .. Mind your own business..

maybe Al was really doing the same.. I have always, always, always, found Al to be approachable.. friendly.. honest and fourright.. A true good guy..

if he didn’t hear you.. or see you, its because.. He didn’t know that you were there.. and if you told him this today.. He would say that he was sorry..

Al will tell you ( read it on Angling Edge website ) that he is a new man since becoming a Christian. Ron and Al admit to past wrongs, but hey we all have them. Amazing what changes becoming a Christian can do for a guy -)

You think he ditched for LESS money? Man I hope you’re right cause not many guys would do that.

I am naive, but not that naive.

But just like how if you hang around IDO enough, you get a feel that the people who run it are good people (muah muah muah), you watch Al, read his articles and friend him on Facebook, you realize that he is a genuine good guy.

I feel differently about Al after being treated like dirt on a Mille lacs mud flat when I was 12. At that time Al Linder was my idol and I couldn’t even get a hi from him. Now I realize it’s been 16 years since some kid fishing walleye with his dad got shot down by his idol but it still kind of bugs me.

So who is your idol now?

I mean we all look up to someone in the fishing industry, right? That is why we are here. Fishing is the drug we all crave.

I don’t idolize anybody anymore Calvin. I respect a lot of people like you and a bunch of guys I’ve met on IDO. Like my dad says show me respect and I’ll give it rite back.

I’m going to be taking that sweet drug all weekend gimmie a shout Cal.

Way off topic but has anyone noticed or though it ironic that Calvin’s last name, if said quickly, and you don’t know how it is correctly pronounced looks like it could be pronounce “Swivle”? A pro-staffer with a last name that is related to something in fishing, odd.

On ice last winter with a bunch of guys including Dave Genz. I pulled in a decent 11″ crappie, he picks it up and puts it in his cooler. I am upset and he is no longer my idol.
