Gas Fireplace Problem

Turned on the old gas fireplace last night and it only stays lit for about 15 seconds then goes out. Did this numerous times after cycling gas, pilot and power.
I plan to disassemble and clean but I where can I go to get a home repair person to fix it if it is indeed a part, which I suspect it is?

    Thanks

Are you leaving it lit long enough on pilot setting first?

Per above, it sounds like the thermocouple is shuting of the gas supply as if the unit wasn’t lit.

Pilot was never turned off since last year and was burning strong. I’ll dig into it to clean and see if I can figure it out. I imagine a repair man will cost lots.

Could be a number of things so have a qualified guy look into it. The fireplace is detecting an issue and shutting down for safety.

Last fall I had a bees nest in the exhaust pipe. Wouldn’t have guessed that one myself.

Does anyone know of a qualified guy or place I can call for service?

What kind of fireplace is it??? There should be a tag on it somewhere that indicates the manufacturer, model and find the serial number… that should give you most all the info you need to have. Once you have the brand, try to get someone qualified in that product to do the work. A heating guy is not the right guy for this job. Neither is a handy man, he might get it right, he may not come close…

Most places over here were running $150 per repair, so find out what they are charging for what service. Others may be charging a per hour rate… tough to tell which one to use, but try to get sufficient info prior to hiring, call me if you want to talk about it… 715.892.6926 I’ll be driving home after 3:30…

Thermocouples are funny things, they are a sealed unit that the energy from the heat makes a very small electric charge measured in what are called millivolts.
this is connected to the thermostat gas valve. This makes the gas valve be able to send gas vapor to the burner.
So if no heat to activate the the thermo, then no gas to the burner.
It sounds complicated, but actually it is a very simple set up.
Hope that helps to understand what is happening there.

    Tight lines,

Yep fireplaces suck to work on I try and stay away from them. It should be a power pile. Usually you have to take the dumb thing all apart to replace it.

If the pilot is lit and staying lit make sure gas valve is on “on” and what ever switch to turn it on is on. You can try steel wool on the power pile the round thing the pilot flame is hitting if it works after that get a new one if not try and gently tap on the gas valve it might be stuck and if it lights after that replace the valve $$$.

home service plus took care of mine. I did not know it was covered, the service guy was out on a unrelated problem and I mentioned it to him and he said that it was covered.

To clear up a couple of things from above… the t-couple actually sends m-volt to the pilot keeping it lit… The t-couple send m-volt to valve to allow the burner to light. Ranger’s got it right, they are pain to work on especially if you got big hands… Do make sure that the valve is on if the pilot is lit, it is the source of much embarassment!!! Steel wool and tapping on the valve are good things to try as well… If you can get the pilot hood off, it might be plugged also, the end of a paper clip is a handy tool here… Call a service guy if you get to the valve replacement to be sure its not something else though. Seriously give me a call if you want to trouble shoot some more before the call.

What might have been the end result???

Mike when you get it figured out let me know. My Heat-N-Glo has similar issues. Pilot is on 24/7 and when you flip the switch for flame on it usually works. No remote on mine. I was suspecting the switch last winter but never got around to further checking. But it will be on and then cycle off and maybe come back on. Heating and cooling causing some expansion contraction on the switch and connection??
