Tree Planting?

The wife just reminded me that one of my jobs this summer was to get a tree planted in the front yard. Is it to late in the season to do this? Anything special I need to do with planting this time of year?

    Thanks.

No, it’s actually nearly ideal. Fall is one of the best times to plant a tree. Very early spring right after frost-out is another good time.

The key is that you must keep watering the new tree right up until the ground is frozen solid. Even if the leaves are off the tree, the roots need to be kept moist or they will be damaged. Many people make the mistake of either not watering or stopping as soon as the leaves start to fall.

Also, protect the bark as far up from the base as you can with tree wrap.

Since it’s so dry, what I would also do is start watering the area where you plan to plant the tree to hydrate and soften the soil. Right now, with as dry as it is, the ground is like trying to shovel steel. Also, the tree is going to come in contact with that soil so you don’t want that super-dry soil to wick moisture away from your tree.

The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The second best time is today.

Good info from Grouse. One thing I will expand on is the tree wrap. I use the plastic ones that you can buy and have had good luck. You can make your own as well but whatever you do don’t use a dark color. It will cause the tree to thaw on sunny days in the winter and a good chance it will kill it.

Also pot raised trees survive better then transplanted trees. I put one in last year at this time and it is doing great. Like grouse said keeping watering it. Don’t make the mistake of putting a 6 foot tree in, go 9-12. What kind of tree are you thinking of planting?

Really it was 30 years ago. The trees we plant today are for the most part for the next generation (if you plant any kind of hardwood tree).

Plant a swamp white oak.. they grow fast and you never have to pick up the leaves in the fall.

Carefully prune away all those branches that appear to be about a foot off the ground.

You don’t want main limbs forming that low. They will become too heavy over time and rot will set in.

Get rid of those low branches now so that the tree puts all of it’s energy into growing up and not out. Then continue to take away the lowest branches each year.
