When i was out yesterday, my partner for the day caught a mudpupy. We tossed it.

Should be have put a big hook in it and soaked it for the a few hours??

Besides cats, what might we have caught??

Huh, they’re running about two weeks late.

They breed in fall and move up towards the dam.

Many of the river rats use them as walleye bait. I’ve never had one “in” my boat.

Any size considerations?? This one was about 5″ long in the body alone…

Weird BK. I wonder if all salamanders migrate this time of year? I just saw a standard black and yellow one moving EXTREMELY slowly through the grass yesterday.

Most guys hate them. I think they’re pretty cool! Call me Pug if you must, but I would have a hard time sacrficing one as bait.

No Sir, if a walleye will take a 8 inch bullhead it will take a 5 – 7 in puppie…I would think. Again, I’ve never fished with them….or touched one.

I don’t know much about them, but a few years back they just started showing up at the dam while catten. Seemed like every Nov 1st they started showing up.

    You are the man.

Did I tell you guys I was talking to an owl in the backyard yesterday? He was in the neighbors cottonwood and he was doing more of the growling/cawing. I was able to coax him into a few hoots.

Ok, back to hush puppies. Mmm, they are delicious.

Common at Stillwater in October…and they do bite on minnows. This is the kind of critter you could put to best advantage next time that supervisor you really don’t like asks if you’ve been fishing and have any extra fillets. If you are out of frozen fresh water drum for this purpose, you can skin the mud puppies and present them to you-know-who as perch fillets. Be sure to wish bon appeteet! I gave mine this spring to the raptor center for eagle food when I cleaned out the winter freezer-burn. Guess that says enough about hospital food. (If you pre-hooked your puppies with a #2, be sure to tell them to remove it upon thawing.)

A 8 inch bullhead doesn’t have four legs to scramble back out of a fishes mouth like a mud puppy has, kinda like when you eat some ants and a little later they start crawling back up your throat.
I dont think they make very good bait. But this time of year large plastics on light jigs will catch fish.

Used them several times for catfish and walleyes back in the day.

I don’t think they can crawl back up a fishes throat because when they get hit they are absolutely crushed. Caught more walleyes with them than anything and I think the smallest was around 28inches. Also caught plenty of very large channels with them. Flatties were rare and their size varied. – This was on the MN river way way back in the day. Not sure where they are on the invasive/minnow transport list and what you can do with them now, which is why I don’t bother with them now.

and btw – they are more expensive than willow cats as well if you buy them. http://www.livewaterdogs.com/Prices.html not sure if anyplace local sells them. I think Cabelas in Owatonna had them about 15 years ago…..did I just say the ‘C’ word?

Last time I bought minnows, large fats heads, I got two small (2-2.5″) ones in the bucket with the bait… couldn’t believe they were in there. Guess now I should have saved them… figures I get a killer bait that may have saved the day, and wasn’t smart enough to use it. Same old – same old.

I see them in early spring when spotlighting local lakes. In Wisconsin we’re allowed to harvest 5/day,with either a fishing, small game,or herp. collector’s license.

    They’re almost 1/2 tail…which kind’a taste like frog legs.
