Alumacraft Magnum 175 Tiller

Anyone know what a new one of these runs? (just boat and trailer, middle of the road options, no electronics)

I may be in the market for one of these later this year. After a year of fishing here in Iowa, I have realized that I really like walleye and pike fishing on the Mississippi more than any other style of fishing and I really want the control and handling available to me in a deep-V tiller.

I “compromised” last year and got a tricked-out all-welded super-jon because I thought I would use it for duck hunting as well as fishing. Sorta of the situation where it does a little of everything, but not any one thing very well. With three young kids and a busy schedule, I realize that I am going to downsize to just a couple of hobbies; fishing and bird hunting behind my english setter.

I think a deep-V tiller is what I need for the majority of the open water fishing I will be pursuing. I was out last year a couple of times in these types of rigs and was amazed at the sheer maneuverability. You can work a channel edge or wingdam very accurately and precisely. This is much clumsier in my semi-vee jon with front trolling motor and side console. If I was strictly a bass guy, then it would be a different story.

Before someone brings up the “wife needing a console thing” let me state that my wife just likes to go for boat rides, she’s not into skiing or tubing, so this will primarily be a fishing rig and when we go for rides, she let’s me do the driving.

    Regards,

    Joe

For 2004 with no motor, about $10,000 via internet search including trailer. Title, tax, registration not included.

Try boats.com iboats.com boatrader.com to give you an idea.

Curious if anyone owns one of these? I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts, both the good and the bad. A number of other companies make a similar model, I’m not necessarily sold on Alumacraft…

KK, I own the Navigator 175, and love it! 93″ wide, and rod storage on both sides of the boat! (Tiller) It only has one livewell, so I have expanded storage. It has narrower gunnels than the Magnum, and is wider. The space is great! And, I can still move it around my garage alone!

There are a few 17′ Lund Anglers with side console in the classified section. The angler is 17′ 2″ and 93″ beam. Very nice boats. I do not own one but I have fished out of one. I would also suggest that you look at the Lund Explorer, Alumacraft Navigator, and Crestliner Fishhawk.

The boat pictured above gives you the best of both worlds as it has a kicker motor that you run as a tiller. You can trade your boat in on this one too.
    Thanks, Bill

I bought a Magnum 175 tiller last year. It’s a 2003 with 2004 75 Hp Yammy 4 stroke on it. Technicaly it was used ( under 60 hours ) but it was emaculate and came with a TON of extras. Merten power steering , locators , trolling motors front and back yatta yatta yatta.
Anyhow , I priced this rig new ( 04 boat ,04-75 hp Yammy 4 stroke and Eagle bunk trailer ) and they wanted 16,700.
I got this one loaded for less than that. The guy I got it from was trading up to a 19 foot tiller with a 150 Hp Johnson on it. WAHT A RIG that one is !

Anyways , I got mine late last summer so only had it out maybe 8 times due to the work thing. By fall I fish shallow rocky stuff so don’t use the big boat as a rule.
So far I REALLY like this boat though I honestly hav’nt put enough hours on it yet to find any major likes/dislikes.
One thing I like is the vinyl floor. I did’nt think I would like it but since it was already in there I had no choice. I REALLY dig the Merten power steering unit. My girlfriend is 5’4″ and she can handle that boat NO PROBLEM !

PM me if you have any questions.

All good stuff. I appreciate everyone’s suggestions. I am looking at probably doing something in the August-October timeframe, so for this spring and summer, I will be using my big jon-boat. The barely-used 1 yr old 50 HP E-tec should be good for some trade-in allowance. The boat itself is an all welded lowe with livewell, side console, GPS, Bottom Line 5100, ICOM VHF, Motorguide 82# front motor, and 2 pedestal seats. Its a nice rig for most weekend fishing situations, just lacks some of the control I would like when working wingdams and other river features. I got 2 fat checks in the mail, one from Des Moines and the other from the IRS , but my wife is feeling pretty strongly that my 100 year old farmhouse needs some updating and remodeling before I upgrade my boat… We’ll get some things done around here and then I’ll put the guilt trip on… Like I said, August-October…

JUst my two cents. I own a 175 Magnum with an 80 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. Perfect boat for me. I’ve been out fishing in waves I shouldn’t have been and stayed dry. I don’t miss the console at all – tiller is well worth any other hassle in following tight contour lines and weed edges. I keep a pair of ski goggles in the boat for really cold days and they work better than those short windshields on the consoles anyway. The two livewells are great. With the 80hp my boat tops out at just under 40mph which is just fine for most situations. I don’t fish tournaments so I don’t need to get from one end of the lake to the next in 12 seconds. Also a tank of gas goes a very long way with the setup. My only complaint is that only one of the rod lockers actually locks. SMall potatoes. I got my new for just under $14,000 with a trolling motor and depth finder at a boat show.

Stanman, I agree whole heartedly! I left the console boats for a tiller again. Tons of room! Dry, and in my opinion, a much better ride in choppy water! For me anyway!
You can buy the new locking handles from Perko for your rod lockers.

No need to sell me on the maneuverability of a tiller. One thing I learned last year is the need for quick, responsive control when fishing the river, especially the wingdams and channel edges. These fish really relate to structure, and with the current thrown in to boot, its tough to keep the boat where it needs to be if its not quite designed for the job at hand.

We think alike Cris ,I have always had tillers until my last boat a 18 mr pike with a 150 merc,It was a awsome boat for most people but just not for me ,I sold it last week and am looking for a new tiller boat. I like the navigator but our dealer here has only mercs and honda,s and I think I would like a Yami,I want something I can troll with without a kicker

If I ever get into tournament fishing again, the 620 Ranger tiller intrigues me. When Evinrude gets the 115 ETEC up and running in a tiller, I may have to look at that! But again, a lot has to be said for moving a boat around the garage without blowing out a nut by doing so. Not to mention even fitting the boat in the garage!

Joe, are you going to trade your whole rig or just the boat? You might want to look at a 165 if your going to stay with a 50hp. I just bought my first boat this year, and it’s a tiller to, and I love her to death!

After LaCannes dialed it down, I can get to 1.3 going forward, and sub 1 MPH back trolling. The boat is 93″ wide, and I believe the width really helps in slowing it down. That is on a lake. I hope that helps! As I had mentioned on another post, my boat is always available for on the water demos.

That’s the info I was waiting for Chris. Thanks much.
One more question; after they dialed it down, did it affect your top end any?

    Herb,
They hooked the engine up to a lap top, and basically lowered the RPM’s at idle the way we used to do it with a lead screw on a carbed motor. No difference was seen at top end. I may try going to a 17 pitch prop to try to get it to troll down even more, and help with top end. Right now I am running a 15 @ about 4800 RPM. It should spin about 5k so I have some room to play.

    KornKing,
I am in Cedar Rapids and have an Lumi Tournament 175. I have a console boat but do have a 9.9 kicker. I know this is not what you are looking at but take it from someone who has a family , they like the console. My point is if you want to see how a kicker works on this style of boat maybe it would fill your needs. Let me know.
