I just bought a new Daiwa SG47 line counter reel which I intend to spool up with a full core of 18lb lead core.
The reel will hold 280 yds of 20lb test mono. Anyone know if I will need to put on some mono backing before I spool up the 18lb lead core?
    Thanks,

    JWB,
that is the same set up I made, I would recommend you put some mono on the reel first. forgot how much I put on mine, maybe 10-20 yards of 10 pound XL. this will grip the metal spool good. if you tied the leadcore to the to the metal spool the line could spin around on the spool with no spool friction and you would be useless and in trouble. when you tie the mono to the leadcore, peel back the line covering from the lead about 3 inches and cut off just the lead, pull on the covering, and it will give you a much smaller diameter inwhich to tie your knot. with 10 yards of backing you should be able to put just about all 10 colors on the reel. you could not do that with the model 27. hope that helps. Jack..

    Jack,
I have another SG47 reel rigged up with lead core already also.
Can’t remember what I put below the lead core anymore either though.
Gonna have to start writing this stuff down I guess!

I also rigged a 47 for lead. I pulled the lead out of about 5″ of 18 lb line and tied the line to the spool. Then I secured it with electrical tape. All 10 colors of line fit perfectly. Off of that I added a real small barrel swivel and then a leader of Fireline finished off with a crankbait snap.

    Thanks Dinosaur!
I’ve been waiting to put it on. Didn’t want to have to try and pull it all off and do it over again.
I’ll be making a note of that in my log book this time.
