Cat Tip of the Day: Keep the Mosquitoes Away

This cool spring weather has kept the bugs at bay but last night as I sat there in my long johns on a perfect spring catfishing evening I had my first mosquito encounters. I found myself reaching for the Thermacell as a standard catifsherman’s response to the pesky bugs. After I had everything under control bug wise, it reminded me that this would be a good time to dig up one of my old Cat Tip of the Day posts I did back in 2006 about keeping the mosquitoes away. I will update that Cat Tip with some of the other options for spending a warm, muggy summer evening mosquito free.

Back in 2006 I wrote about a product I found at WalMart that was really doing the trick for controlling mosquitoes. It is called the OFF PowerPad and is designed to repel mosquitos from a 15′ X 15′ area. It is a small candle lantern that activates a mosquito repellant pad. I used it all that summer and it worked perfectly in the boat. The product is designed for people to use on their patios so I figured my boat is a small patio floating on the water – makes sense – right? The PowerPad Lamp comes with one candle and one repellent pad. You can buy refills that come with 3 candles and 3 repellent pads. The candle and repellent pads are supposed to last 4 hours. You can find the lamp and refills at a variety of places: WalMart, Cub Foods, Menards, etc.

Another really good option for mosquito control is a product called ThermaCELL. This is what I use now because it is simple to use and almost 100% effective. It is powered by a butane cartridge which provides cordless, portable heat necessary to operate the device (batteries are not needed). It directs the heat to a metal grill. A mat saturated with repellant is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. You can find ThermaCELL at most any sporting goods store (Cabela’s, Gander Mountain, WalMart, etc) or order directly on-line from ThermaCELL.

If you are going to chase cats at night in Minnesota I highly recommend one of the two products described. I’ve used them both and they work.

Is the Thermacell better than the lamp in your opinion? How many do you use?

We used the candle on some camping trips and it worked well for all bugs. For example when we set up our screen tent I left the door open overnight (liquid stupid) and the next morning it was just packed with all types of bugs. I pulled out the candle one and in 1/2 hour the screen tent was bug free, now to me that was a good test for the product.

The thermocell (my Dads) I tried last summer when the flies were very bad in the boat and it didn’t do a thing for the flies at least,Maybe the pad was to dried out or something ??? It’s still in the boat but I have to get some refills for it and will try it again. Can you still find refills for the candle one somewhere ?

I bought a Theracell to keep the bugs away after fishing with someone that had one. It works great. And after my parents tried mine when we where grilling one night they have bought two to use at home. The neighbor picked one up and I got one for the aunt for her birthday. Great product in my opion. I’ll have to tryy the lantern too though.

They both work effectively and the lantern is cheaper to use. BUT – I prefer the ThermaCELL because it is so easy to use. No matches to light a candle; the lantern can tip over but the ThermaCELL you can place it about anywhere; It takes up very little room.

One other thing about the lantern. The light from the candle attracts other types of bugs which can be kind of a pain at times. The other bugs (nats, or whatever) would get around the lamp and die off. I would have to clean up bugs around where ever I had the lamp setting the night before.

I only use one ThermaCELL. It seems to provide plenty of coverage.

Thanks for the heads up on Fleet Farm, Ryan. I stopped in there yesterday and bought a couple large refill packs. That is a good price.

I’m glad I could save some people a few bucks! And I am really glad that I didn’t drive to Cabela’s to use their coupon for the Thermacell ($20).
