Door County Ice Fishing

We now have ice covering most of the Bay of Green Bay but there are a lot of areas off shore that still have ice conditions that are not yet safe for travel. We have been getting out and doing some fishing but mostly checking ice conditions along with finding good access points to get vehicles and ice houses on the ice.

We have done some fishing for Whitefish in some areas with good success one day and slower action on others but over all not a lot of time fishing. With this next push of cold weather we should be able to start putting ice houses out by the end of next week as ice conditions improve. We will have the larger houses set up on whitefish grounds and be using our Otter portables for fishing Walleyes.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been spending some time fishing a couple of our inland lakes here in Door County and having pretty good success finding a good mixed bag of fish including Walleye,Northern Pike ,Bass and the elusive Rainbow trout. We have been fishing shiner minnows under tip-ups along with jigging VMC Tingler spoons tipped with minnow heads.

In the areas we have been finding success there are a lot of weeds so the key for us has been finding pockets in the weeds with our Marcum under water cameras or setting our tip-up sets above the weeds so fish can see the baits along with keeping the baits from swimming into the weeds. Ice conditions are good with around a foot of ice but there is snow and slush on top of the ice. We will soon be operating full tilt on the Bay and will keep info coming.
