Red Lake crappie fishing report

Yesterday I made a quick trip up to Red Lake in hope of catching some of the huge crappies that Red Lake has to offer. I made this trip with a group of guys from our church in Malmo Mn.

The photo included with this report is of Pastor Jim Raisanen. He caught this dandy crappie just after dark. The perch and walleye kept our group busy while the crappie bite was on an off day. Our group managed only 3 crappie for our efforts on this trip. I managed to tangle with a big toothy critter on two different occasions. With the big critter the winner both times….ending with a broken line! Guess I’ll be hearing about this trip for awhile…

This was a good day for conversation and good eating! I managed to cook up some hot dogs and brats on the tail gate of the truck. If the fish aren’t biting, you can always take the time and eat…

We fished out of Rogers around 2 3/4 miles from shore. Many fisherman I talked with said that it was an off day, maybe the weather change was to blame? The lake conditions overall are starting to get worse. The lake roads do have some water standing that will slow your travel. We found a number of areas that had some flooding and caused us to take other routes on and off the ice.

This might have been an off day for this group, but all you have to do is see one of these big Red Lake crappies come out of a fish hole and you will want to come back another time.
