Whitewater Report

Saturday was the 1st reasonably warm day that we have had in a few weeks, so I took advantage of the day and spent some time in the Whitewater area.

The first couple of hours were spent on the South Branch of the Whitewater. I fished two deep holes that hold lots of trout this time of year. I started out fishing with a dual nymph rig, a #12 hare’s ear trailed by a #16 pheasant tail. Not so much as a nibble. Instead of changing rigs I added some weight, bingo! More weight was the ticket. I pulled out 5 nice trout all on the hare’s ear. This stumped me a little because of the size of the fly. A #12 is much larger than I usually use this time of year. In fact the only reason it was on orriginally was for added weight. I played with the setup a little switching to smaller nymphs with weight. Again no action, so I switched to two larger nymphs. The action again picked up. It goes to show you should never argue with a fish. On the day I picked up 12 nice trout on the South Branch before the cold got to me.

After a little warm up I fished a small section of Beaver Creek. Beaver is one of my favorite streams. Each year in March I have gotten into some very large trout on olive wooly buggers. Even though it is a little early, and cold I couldn’t resist. The action was not great, but with a little warm up I would expect this bite to pick up in a hurry. In less than an hour I landed 4 browns. All were caught on a dead drifted olive bugger size 12.

All in all it was an interesting day. It goes to show that small changes in presentation can bring some nice results. Don’t get caught in a rut of using only one or two presentations. Without a little experimentaion on the day I may have been skunked.

  1. Hi, Thanks for the report Todd. I haven’t been out yet but will begin to do so as soon as I get my new waders. Fly fishing the Beaver is a tough assignment but I never cease to marvel at the trout in that stream.

  2. Beaver is a great stream, but it’s not an easy fish. The water is clear and fish are fairly spooky. It’s also a very technical casting stream, so many avoid the problems. For both of these reasons, along with the numbers of fish, it tends to be one of my favorite steams.
