2-5-04 South Center, Mn Crappie

I decided to make an early moring run to South Center to see how the fishing was. Not much has changed. The crappies are still more than willing to bite once you’ve located them. 50′-80′ were the best depths today. the big change was in the number of fish I caught only 8′-10′ down. Usually the school suspends from 20′-40′, but when you find the shallower fish, you’ve found the jackpot. These fish all were 10"+, and bit for about 30min, and then they were gone. I was never able to relocate the high fish, but did manange to catch 20-30 more from the 20′ range. These fish continue to be a little smaller, with 1 of 3 over 9". The old reliable Swedish Pimple with waxies put all the fish on the ice today.

There was 10"-12" of snow over the lake. There aren’t plowed roads, but cars can get around if you stick to the main travel ways. With my 4×4 truck I was able to drive most anywhere, but be sure to avoid snowdrifts by fish houses as you can easily get stuck there. You may also want to bring an extension for the auger, especially if you have a house that sits off the ice at all. I only had about 6 more inches to go when I drilled holes today.

I hope to get out Fri morning again, but will busy for the weekend. Good luck if you head out.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. I was thinking about heading to center. How are the walleyes biting this time of the year?
I’d like to get those good eat’n size, bout’ 2 to 3 pds. Will I find any like that over at South, er?

  2. Normally we get a bonus walleye while crappie fishing during the day. I usually will set a tip up about a foot off the bottom. I didn’t set one last time out as I knew I wasn’t going to be out long. The best walleye bite is in the evening in 10-18′. There’s a couple ares that are rocky and adjacent to deep water where they come to fedd. Look for the houses and you’ll know where I’m talking about. Good luck.
