Big Fish Light Tackle!!!

This bite has been very consistent this past week with numerous day clients are landing 10-15 fish all jigging. Just too much fun on light tackle and bait casters! I grew up trolling Lake Michigan but without a doubt in my opinion this is absolutely the most fun I have ever had fresh water fishing!

Nothing can compare to the one on one battle of you and the fish on stand up light tackle! The bite this week has been best early and late with 1/2 ounce jigs and plastics working the best. Landed some big fish this past week and saw fish busting all over on the surface (like tuna eating baitfish in the ocean) it’s was amazing!!!!!

The water on the surface today was 43 degrees just outside the harbor. The crazy thing is Port Washinton, Sheyboygan and all these other harbors have not a sole jigging for them in the boats, and there’s just as many fish being caught there by shore fisherman!

  1. Ditto I want nothing more than to catch these fish on jigs, jigging spoons or casting. Don’t get me wrong trolling has it’s time and place when the fish are off shore but when the fish come shallow like this I firmly believe jig fishing will consistently out fish trolling in the months of July and August. At time in September the fish want to eat cranks and J-plugs and jerk baits more than jigs so when that happens be prepared.

  2. Hey Eric!
    Awesome job (as usual!)
I have been using the same technique both for suspended salmonoids and also big Bass in trout lakes that have a smelt forage base introduced.
Just curious if you would share your tackle set up for this jigging technique? Rod, reel, line etc…

    Thanks, Tom

  3. Great report Eric. Hoping to get over there the second week of Sept. if not sooner and check some of that fishing out. Looks like a blast.

Rod 7-9 foot St. Croix medium action rods with 12 lb test or braid with 10-12 leaders. 3/8 ounce Darter 26 jigs with a 5″ white jerk shad.

Although we have had great success doing this, like many other things there’s a lot more to it than most anglers think. Meaning it’s not always easy to catch them, so be prepared to adjust things.

Great Leverage and a the MF action works well with the braid… Ya got me thinking… Not a bad thing for an ols dog once in a while!
