Pool 5, Mississippi River Walleye Report

Well lot of things have changed over the last week. With water temps dropping almost 10 degress the numbers of the quality of fish have really kicked in. Most of the action has been at the dam for numbers. Lots of 15 – 18 inch walleyes have finally showed up or should I say finally decided to eat. Most everyone I have seen or talked to are using 1 of 3 things; Sonars, FisherFlick jigs, or super doos. Also the main channel area out in front of the city dock is kicking out some fish. Most people were vertical jigging there. I decided to three way live bait rig through there and found some better quality that way. Using Floaters (orange and black) with minnow and 1 1/2 bell sinker was the best presentation for the three way.

For myself, I have spent most my time a long ways away from the dam. Most of the time I have not even heard or seen a boat in the area. The wingdams I have been concentrating on hold some deep water. When I mean deep I mean 40+ feet. No guys not the power line area! I am talking way down river. These set of wingdams have really been kicking out some MONGO walleyes. All the walleyes I have caught on these wingdams have been in the 18-26 inch range. I did have one on top of the water that would of gone 28 inches but since I was by myself this day I was not able to get the net in time. Along with the walleyes have been some huge stripers in the 3+ to almost 4lbers.

This first picture is a couple walleyes I took on these wingdams just before evening. The best prestentation this day was a 1/4 oz. FisherFlick jig again. This particular wingdam is L shaped and has two hot spot on it. The tip of the L and the inside cup of the L. Current is flowing from shore out to the main channel. Working that jig as it was just going with the current seemed to be the best presentation. Just before evening the walleyes shallowed up along the rip rap shoreline(hint).

My father had a trip the same day for a couple hours in the afternoon. Martin, a bowhunter from Georgia, landed this beautiful sauger on one of the ol’ mans favorite sand flat just before evening along with 7 other nice eaters. The feed bag is on. Until next week good luck. The duck action is in full force too. Dylan has been out almost every evening this week and has been producing his limit every night. The Fall frenzy is here. Now I have to decide what I am gonna do. Let’s see deer hunt, walleye fish, duck hunt. HUHHH!lol
