Mille Lacs Lake 6/2/07 Saturday

This past weekend my fishing club had our monthly Outing on Mille Lacs lake. My partner Randy (SenkoKing) and I left Friday afternoon for our 2-day trip to try our hand at the Walleyes this lake is famous for.

We got on the water Friday afternoon around 4pm. We decided to do some looking around and eliminate some water. Our club is a multi-species club, and on Fri Randy and I did some looking around some of the SW bays and Indian Point area for Smallmouth Bass. We did find a few smaller fish, but not any descent fish that we wanted to waste our time with on Saturday. We didn’t even bring along any Leeches on this short scouting trip. Saturday morning we hit a south end gravel hump for Walleyes, using Leeches with 8 to 9 foot snells, a red or green hook, with a large Leech. The wind was descent enough that we would motor upwind, and drift in the wind, with a driftsock out to slow us down. If we wanted to traverse cross-wind, I’d use the T-8 for control, and it worked out quite well. The first pic above is Randy with one of his big Walleyes, a beauty at 26 1/2 inches. The fish were agressive enough you did not have to wait very long after the bite to set the hook. Two to three seconds was long enough, and most fish were hooked right in front of their mouth. The next pic is with my best Walleye of the day at 26 inches. Talking with other club members Sunday and Monday, it sounded like everyone had a great day, and the WAlleyes were biting just about everywhere they fished.

By early afternoon, I thought we better head to the eastern shoreline to try and find some Smallmouth. We found a very small area that did hold some fish. Randy caught his club limit of six Smallies all with a 3 inch tube, and I caught my limit with a mixture of 4 inch Senko’s, and Leeches. The fish were quite negative in this small area, but we caught our 12 fish in about 2 hours.

We went back to some of the south end gravel in the evening to upgrade a few of our Walleyes. We tried 4 mile, and a small area about 5 miles SW of there.
We had a great day, the strong storms and rain just missed us a few times during the day, but caused no problems for us.
Anyone really looking for a good time, Mille Lacs Walleye fishing is just about as good as it has ever been right now..

Sorry we did not hook up on Friday night. Looks like you figured it out anyways!

  3. Jack,

Thanks for the awesome weekend of fishing. This lake has to be one of the best lakes in Minnesota for multi species fish! I had a great time and look forward to our next outing.
