Lake of The Woods Report

I was fortunate enough to spend the first part of June on LOTW. We fished our annual trip out of Helliars Resort at Nestor Falls,Ontario. One word would sum up the action. MUSKIES……everywhere for everybody!! Here is a pic of yours truly with a little guy.

The lake level was up nicely from the levels of the last couple years, but spring was late and we found we had to look in new areas for active fish. As I mentioned earlier Muskies were aggressive and plentiful. Here is a pic of BFD with a 18# short fish.

These muskies were all caught trolling spinner/bait rigs along weed lines in four to ten feet of water. All were released back to the lake. Our group of eight caught 21 muskies ranging from 7# up to this 30# beauty Little B took while fishing with the St. Croix rod he was given at last years get together. Thanks James and Jon!!!

Walleyes were not concentrated in any real numbers this week. While we did catch plenty, we caught them two and three at a time in any given area, then had to move to a new spot. Our walleyes were taken trolling the weed edges with the spinner rigs or jigging rocky points in 16 to 24 ft. of water. The last pic is of Little B with a typical LOTW walleye.

  1. Sorry, I can’t get the rest of the photos to upload I’ll try it here…….Nope won’t work here either, I’ll Try to get em up later

  2. Nice report, and nice pants, too!

Congrats again Little B on the musky. I think I saw that thing in Jurassic Park.

  3. I like that shot at Shore Lunch. “Land of Sky Blue Waters” comes to mind. I see that there was no down time as far as fishing goes. Looks like the guys in the background are busy tending lines.

I can almost taste those fish. Looks like a great time!

    -Jon.

  4. Way !!! Nice !!!

No wonder your catching such big Muskies, looking at the chum rope your using over the edge of the boat

  5. Just got back from LOTW. We stayed at Angle Outpost Lodge. Very nice place and very reasonable. The weather was tough. Winds coming from the west / northwest up to 30mph. Lots of rain, and plenty cold. We found the muskies. They were a bit “cold” for us. The largest being 42″. Had plenty of other bigger fish follow up to the boat and even chase around the bait on figure-8s, but to no prevail. On average, raised 10 fish a day, with only 1 or 2 takers. Largest raised was a fish in the HIGH 40s, close to 50″.

Walleye fishing was crazy. We got into “pods” of males, off spawning areas. The jig would hardly touch the bottom and it was fish on. Got boring catching 75 males, since they were all in the 13 to 18 inch range. We did hunt down some females. Largest being 26″, plenty of others that were in the 20 to 25 inch range, but they were tough to get to bite. As for bait, they wanted spinners. We used glow beads/red blade, or red beads and a gold blade. Some spots, the fish wanted crawlers, the next: Leeches, the next Minnows. So you had to expirement a bit.

We did run some K-grubs and ring worms. They worked better than I thought they would. We ran them on the sandy beaches. Man, those fish hit them hard!!!

Water temps are in the high 50s, struggling quite hard to reach 60.

All fish were mostly on West facing bays with sandy beaches.

Talking to the lodge, it looks like the weather is going to improve over the next couple of weeks, being that the water will warm up. If you are chasing the muskies or walleyes, stay close to spawning areas. They are not far!!!!

Shoot me PMs if anyone needs locations!

  6. JUST COME BACK FROM IGNACE. WET COLD THERE ALSO. FISH COOPERATED NICELY AS WE HAD GOOD FISHING FOR WALLEYES AND NORTHERNS. BLACK BUCKTAILS WITH GOLD HEADS WERE THE TICKET FOR GRILLED WALLEYE AND GARLIC BREAD!! MOST OF THE PARTY FISHED LEECHES WITH THOSE JIGS BUT I RODE BARE BACK THE HOLE TRIP. IF YOU ARE GOING TO THE IGNACE AREA CALL AHEAD FOR BAIT. WE HAD SOME TROUBLE OBTAINING BAIT.

    GUNDY

  7. I have caught lots of walleyes on spinners, but have not tried them for garlic bread. Do they fight hard or just sort of a mushy hit?
