Easter Weekend Mississippi River Panfish Report

Looks like from the recent rain and runoff this may be my last late season report. If it is, then so be it. The fishing has been good. Not exactly great, but good enough to make me want more.

The Crappie and Perch have been on a love hate bite for me. One minute they’re in love with what I dunk down the hole and the next, they’re just window shopping. It’s frustrating trying to stay on top of their appetite but entertaining in the same regards. My LX7 consistently showed fish, keeping my attention through out the day….now if I could just get it to keep them feeding.

The best jig/bait combo was a Majmun in black tipped with a Berkley Gulp! minnow. If I wasn’t using that, then a gold Slender Spoon tipped with a minnow head was producing equally. The key was to keep the rod tip moving, but only about an inch up & down. It was mostly a rhythmic twitch but it sure worked well with putting fish on the ice.

I think the highlight of the adventures I had over the Easter weekend was using the boat to get to my favorite ice fishing spots. Loading up the Lowe with a bunch of gear seems odd but it was the fruits of the labor that made it so enjoyable. The spots we hit we had all to ourselves. For me that is pure joy.

Lastly I want to thank the fine people at Custom Jigs and Spins for producing some outstanding ice fishing tackle. The new Tungsten jigs have been my mainstay jigs on my ice rods. I can’t wait to get out on the open water and use them chasing Crappies & Bluegills all throughout the warm weather seasons.

Good luck to those who still have some safe ice. I’ll be out this weekend looking for one more adventure of walking on water. Hopefully making just one more report.

  1. I’ve broken ice with the boat and done a lot of crazy things to catch fish but have never boated to an ice fishing spot. I love it! Nice job!

  2. Have to love this time of year, great report and congrats on the work outs Tom! Those fish look extra big in front of that skinny dude
