Why aren't leeches farm raised?

I have heard that the reason leeches are so scarce and expensive is that there are only a few guys who trap them and it’s some work to collect them from all the small traps. It’s not like throwing a seine out and getting a bunch of minnows in one easy move. So is there a reason why leeches cannot be raised in ponds by the millions?

I did a quick google search on farm raised leeches and had a crap load of sites pop up. As soon as I saw instructions on “How to breed a leech”, I figured there was much more information out there than I care to know about shock

The Cenex in malmo does all there own trapping for bait. They say the leeches started the spawn cycle early this year that’s why there is a shortage… I want those super jumbos dang it not these poopy pan fish leeches!

But just in general, it seems like the supply of leeches is always tight and they are always expensive. I wish they were as cheap as minnows are. Just wondering why they cannot be raised in larger quantities.

Was just up in Canada and they said the ponds the guys raise them in are shallow and once they heat up they don’t fare well. Plus, because of a 2 year incubation once the supply runs out there is nothing they can do.
