Had a buddy tell me he’s heard of anglers using WD-40 as a fish attractant, I chuckled when I heard it, but maybe its true? Anyone heard of this?

I have also heard of people using Wd40. Preperation H works good to because of the fish oil in it.

Reliable sources proclaim this to be true. I haven’t tried it myself but I don’t question the guys that did.

Yup heard it, Done it. Also while I’m on the subject as owner of a laundry mat with all stainless steel equipment. W-D 40 is the best cleaner polish for stainless steel out on the market in my opinion. Another quicky for guys with bunk trailers that stick spray the carpet with armor-all. WARNING if you do this your bunk will unload like a roller trailer so DO NOT UN HOOK UNTIL YOUR BOAT IS IN THE WATER..
Just another tip I thought I slip in.

Several years ago on a trip out west I was visiting with fishermen who were after white sturgeon on the Columbia River. Everyone of the anglers I visited with used a cut bait of some type and WD-40. They reason as explained to me was the basis for WD-40 is shark oil and its an attractant for fish. since then I’ve tried it for walleye (minnows, crawlers, and plastics) and can’t tell much difference. It certainly did not seem to stop the fish from biting.

Anyone know if the petroleum elements of WD-40 eventually wreck the finish on lures or the integrity of the plastic on cranks? I’m a little curious, as most oils erode or at least weaken plastic.

I too have seen this, but personally I think it’s goofy and very likely about the same as spraying petrol products straight into our waterways. here’s what I found on the net about contents, shark oil my booty…..This is off a mechanical engineering site where they needed to determine the contents for an application. MSDS is “materials safety data sheet”, which has to be filed with the gov. on contents.

While the marketing “pitch” lists the ingredients as “secret”, the MSDS indicates the following:

    60-70% petroleum distillates
    15-25% base oil
    2-3% carbon dioxide

So it would appear that WD40 is simply a combination of petroleum products, mixed with a propellant (CO2).

“it seems to me i was poluting” good point pfluggy

putting wd40 on a bait would be just like spraying some of it in the water directly from the can….and that is pollution in my opinion

I confer with Jared, why would we add additional distillates to the environment. I know my outboard introduces more than enough already.
