I generally put out the oriole feeders on the 25th of April. The earliest I have seen an oriole is the 22nd, until yesterday.

I think with each year’s late winters becoming more moderate in temperature many birds are moving north earlier. Still, late snows can be hard on some species. I’m not sure how adaptable orioles are to sudden cold, but it does seem early to have them here already.

Seen on in my backyard down here in Iowa on Monday. They sure are beautiful birds.

I think some bird species end up here that traditionally never make it this far North because of southern storms and strong south winds. There have been some doves around here for over month. These are NOT mourning doves. Considerably larger and much different song.
Looking forward to seeing Orioles because they generally nest in one of my pine trees, though I dont think I have ever seen a baby one.

Speaking of nests Capt Musky, here’s a Hummingbird nest I found and got a picture of a couple years ago. The egg inside the nest is about the size of the metal band on a common lead pencil that holds the eraser. The nest itself is smaller in diameter than a fifty cent piece.

Every year we have a nest that is occupied in our cedar tree. We always make sure to have feeders on both side of the cedar and a couple in the apple trees near by.

When I was a kid, we would cut oranges in half and put them on a post, the Orioles loved it !!!

Anybody in Minnesota seen an orioles or hummer yet? This is one of those threads you wish everybody had location on.

According to the map the Hummers are still in Iowa. It will take a bit before they get to me in Carlton. I will have feeders up at the end of April just in case.

James that map is really fun to watch. It’s kind of eerie how they know what birds are where based on satellite but I digress.

Usually we see them in beautiful Kandiyohi county first week of May, although them dam barn swallows are just itching for us to put the canopy on the lift.

That is a cool pic! If that male is a baby its pretty dang big and full color. He is going to be a drain on momma and in her basement for far too long drinking grape flavored red bulls and bogging down her internet.

The male is feeding the young one. He would feed them once and then they were on their own. I don’t think we ever saw the female feeding the young ones. Sometimes we had 5 orioles trying to eat the grape jam at once.

This hummer was chasing another one but flew into our screen house. I took a quick picture and actually pushed him back out by his beak.

We’ve had as many as 7 at one time at four different oriole feeders. Males are really territorial, so it was seldom to get two or more of them until I spread the feeders out and out of sight of each other. The chicks can be a fun watch.

That hummer sure looks silly. I’ve heard of other people who have had to dislodge the little suckers from screens.

I got the feeder loaded with jelly and oranges. Hope I can attract a few more this year. Only had a few last year. They were only around for a few days.
