Older concrete repair

The other post reminded me of this. The concrete in my garage is spalling, the surface is breaking up. If I tap on it with a hammer it sounds hollow near the areas that have already failed. Is there a way to repair this that will last?

Cut it out and fix your grade

Not much can be done with mortar spauling, pictures would help, but if the surface peels off and its structurally sound yet, it can be resurfaced once the bad spots have all spauld. Not sure what the grade would have to do with spauling.

    Ardex CD Fine.

I’ve used it for exactly what you talking about. Comes in gray and white. Can mix to match what your current concrete color is. Have to have sound concrete underneath.

Rent a bush bit and electric hammer. Not the big hammers but something like a large Bosch or hilti hammer drill. Pound out the loose stuff, wash, mix and trowel concrete in. You can trowel for smooth finish or broom. I sometimes wet the broom or brush to make the edges blend into the old concrete so the is no noticeable edge.

Practice in a few spots to get a feel for the way to finish to your liking.

I wonder if it was ardex that I used to use as a patch for flooring, looks similar. We put flooring over it so never saw what it looked like after.

Ardex is a self leveling floor repair used for decades by flooring companies to patch and relevel before putting the new floor down.

Probably doesn’t. But he stated it sounded hollow in areas, that’s likely caused by erosion under the slab.

Ardex CD Fine does not self level. You have work it like regular concrete. It just a thin layer that bonds to the old. Basically an overlay of a new wear surface.

I believe ardex does make self leveling products along with many others. Best to check out the application for your project. But for the op, I would use cd fine.

The hollow sound normally comes from the top layer delaminating.

The hollow sound could be just that. It’s hollow under the slab from the over-dig backfill settling over time. It’s fairly common.

The hollow sound is from the spalling, I was not hitting it hard enough to tell if there is a void under the concrete.
