I’m gonna be up on the north shore this weekend. In the Tofte/ Lutsen area but also driving through The whole area.

Is it possible or better yet likely a guy could catch a trout or salmon casting from shore right now??

Lake Trout is closed until sometime in January. Casting from breakwaters can be a good way to hang on to a coho or a king, possibly a steelhead. A walleye rod with 6 pound mono on a reel with a good drag will work. Gold/orange seems to be a standard color combo but blue/silver and green/silver are great too along with the rainbow trout pattern. Little Cleos and Krocodile lures are common lures in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce. Cast and count down to 15 or 20 and retrieve at a moderate rate. Bring a net with a long handle!

Loopers and salmon can be kept currently and maybe browns. I would have to double check browns but VERY unlikely to get one of them on N shore espicially now.

Two harbors wall is a good place to start and I would suspect the West wall in Grand Marais but you have to do the boulder dash to get on it.

Thanks guys. So you are talking about walking or climbing onto a breakwall? Probably best to access deeper water that way?

In my mind I was thinking maybe a stream inlet….but maybe that’s more of a spring thing

    lindyrig79:

Fishing the mouths of rivers can be a decent shore fishing opportunity anytime… and spring and fall should be two of the better times of the year… just not sure which mouths have fish runs that correspond to this time frame. Also in many cases harbors have some type of inflow to the lake…

I agree with Tom’s advice on equipment choices and Two Harbors seems to get lots of ink inside these pages.

    They
d be quiet right now but you can still go cast them as long as the lure has a single hook if you’re inside the 100 feet of the moving water.

II fished Grand Marais’s breakwater several years back but the rock is hard to move around on. Silver Bay’s breakwall are the same rock type structure. Two Harbors is a simple walk-on and concrete surfaces so getting around it pretty simple. No hook restrictions on breakwaters. You do need a trout stamp to fish though.

Thanks B Man. I’ll have my wife along and it’s more of a birthday trip for her.. so it’ll likely be just a few short stops along the drive and then maybe a little more over the weekend

    Awesome, thanks Tom
