Anyone else been to Winona to take this in? Ma and I didn’t want to get stuck in the house yesterday since its likely the only day for a week to get out and do something. We.ve been to this Museum several times and when the oldest boy called to see if we were going to be home [his wife was off doing a girlie thing for the day] we said to stop over and he could tag along. He’d never heard of the place even though he had two years of Master’s classes in Winona not all that long ago.

Every month on the second Saturday thru 2019 they charge a buck a head. I can tell you straight away that nowhere on this planet has a better admission rate on these second Saturdays for the quality of the art they exhibit. One may wonder where the “maritime” comes into play here….every single piece of art displayed has natural water of some sort with the exception of one piece, but that piece shows a pitcher so the inference is there.

If you find yourself wondering what to do for a day, pack the family in the car and take a spin to Winona to visit this gallery. There is something for everyone and in fact the place is super kid-friendly with a work room where they can try working with different art related mediums. There are guided tours that last about a half hour but they really just scratch the essence of the art shown in the gallery. We always catch a tour, then, like yesterday, we go back thru to really spend time appreciating what’s there to be seen. George Washington Crossing the Delaware takes a person’s breath away and is one of two original paintings that were done simultaneously. The one at the gallery hung in the Whitehouse for some 30 years before the private family owners decided to get it hung here in Winona. There’s an original of the Statue of Liberty that is about 8 feet tall and is another that makes a person stop and really take pause.

Its easy to find. Just good google the topic title exactly and you’ll get everything you need to contact or find this museum. Its a great time spent and loaded with history.

    Thanks Tom,

I went to the one in Red Wing a few years back. It was a small museum but I did learn that at one time there was an outboard motor manufacturer in Red Wing.

I’ll keep this one on mind for the future. Love River History!

Great suggestion, Tom. Our family went a few years ago and were surprised how nice it was. Some very cool artwork. I’m curious what has changed since then so may have to check it out.

Bob Kierlin & his business partner Steve Slaggie (Both from Fastenal Co. fame & fortune) seemed to have found a way to bring Winona, famous art, that the average joe would never have a chance to see otherwise. I hope to check it out myself some day.

Slaggie does a ton of good things for the area. I know his family has their name on the donor wall at Mayo in Rochester. I want to say that even the cancer education office at mayo, where my wife got all the cancer info, is sponsored by the Slaggies.

The Slaggie’s actually own property on my very small dead end street but I’ve never met them. I even ran & hooked up his cable TV, in the 90’s, when his new brick home was built. Never met him then either. I’m in the Blue house, on the corner, before your empty river property at the dead end Steve, stop by & have a beer!

I hooked up Kierlin’s cable at his Argentina style home, with the indoor pool, about that time too. His wife was a former Ms Argentina and she also my daughter’s Ballet Teacher back then. Never met Mr. Kierlin either but his wife was very good with the ballet kids.
