I have a relative who is planning on grouse hunting in the Pillsbury state forest tomorrow. He ask me to find out if Steel shot is required there. For my research all I can find is that it is required in a WMA ( Waterfowl management area ) I cant find anything in regard to state forest. Anyone have a answer to this ?

You do not need steel shot while hunting grouse in state forest

On a related note, steel is not required in WMAs (wildlife management areas) but is require in WPAs (waterfowl production areas).

Last year, there was potential legislation in the works that would have banned the use of lead in fishing tackle, shot shells, and other ammunition on public lands and waters. It ultimately did not pass but you can expect it to come up again down the road.

Please note a WMA is a Wildlife Management Area. Lead shot is legal in a WMA.

A WPA is a Waterfowl Production Area. Non-toxic shot is required to be used in a WPA.

Page 41 of the general hunting regulations covers this subject. To summarize, lead shot is legal statewide for hunting small game, except if in a WPA or if one is waterfowl hunting anywhere.

Page 94 begins coverage on WMA’s.

Page 113 begins coverage on WPA’s.
