Jiffy 3hp Auger issues…

I have a Model 30 auger (early 2000’s) with a tecumseh motor. The issues im having are whenever im drilling a hole it gets about halfwaf through and it dies. I have tried EVERYTHING priming it while this happens, moving the choke in different settings (gas cap vent open of course) changed the plug out, new gas, you name it. Last year it was in the shop 3 times trying to figure it out and even the mechanic didnt know what it is. The carb has had a rebuild kit in it as well. Should i just bite the bullet and buy a new carb or is it just something simple im missing??? Any suggestions would be a great help.

Does the motor actually die out, or is the auger bit actually binding as your drilling 1/2 way down? Have you changed the blades on your drill? Does this happen with every hole?

Welcome to IDO …Great first post, I am sure your not alone.

There are two screws under the gas tank on the jiffy(YES, I own one too). I believe the screw on the left in this photo is the one that will adjust your issue.

My thoughts exactly. Have you had the compression checked?

could it be possible that the tank has some crud in it and it is restricting the filter. There is usually a filter on the suction hose in the tank. Not sure thats your problem but not too hard to check.

Do you have fresh gas without any old gas in your tank? My jiffy does the same thing if i have gas from the year before. As soon as i get fresh gas it runs great.

I have the exact same auger with that exact issue. It starts great, warms up and about 5-10 seconds into the hole caput!

Calvin, First off thank you for the welcome. As for your reply yes it dies out. I have to believe the compression is good. It cuts like a champ and then all of a sudden it just quits.

Bob, Ill adjust that screw and see if it works, Thanks

    I’ll second that

Mine seems to need this adjusted everytime I get ready for a new ice season.

Mine does this often, typically after I have run across the lake on the 4-wheeler with the auger strapped to the front, things get rattled around. I always bring a little screw driver along to make small adjustments as needed.

Good luck, I hope this takes care of your issues.

It should run a lot better after this adjustment as well.

I have had the same issue. Big difference after the adjustment.

Before I sold my Jiffy a number of years ago I was having the exact same trouble. In for service three times. Finally called the factory.

They told me to do exactly what Bob explained above but they added that the screw should be adjusted while under load. Which is why adjusting it in my garage wasn’t working.

That worked for me, but it still needed adjusting each time out and I sold mine with the screw driver if I remember right.

What we used to do to load it so you can get the adjustment close at home is push it hard into some snow/ice covered ground with blade guard on. Usually we were good to go on the ice.

only cure i fould is like others are saying. there is 2 adjustment screws. 1 is for fuel mixture at idle and the other is for fuel mixture under load (best while actually cutting) and it doesnt take much of a turn to adjust the load screw

base line adjustments are the left screw, the “low” idle adjustment should be turrned out 1 1/8 turns.

The right screw, the “high” idle or load adjustment should be turned out between 5/8 and 3/4 turns. then fine tune from there

the right screw should be your issue and only adjust this screw a few degrees at a time. always keep a screwdriver with because they seem to need adjustment as the temp goes up and down.

I went to a SM for winter time and my old Jiffy for posts in the summer

You gotta give it to the Jiffy Crowd though,….they are dedicated. Specifically the Model 30’ers.

There has to be two auger manufacturers out there. It doesn’t matter which side of the RED fence a person’s on, the other brand will get better because of the other.
