Buddy just bought a nice used strikemaster with chipper blade. I’m used to a lazermag, I drilled some holes with his auger and it felt like forever to even pop through 4 inches of ice. Can he put on a lazer blade? Single? Does it even help to sharpen a chipper blade? Thanks iceheads.
It helps a lot to have a sharp chipper blade. You can attach a lazer drill to any Strikemaster auger. I have a Mag III that I put a lazer drill on and works great. The motor has to be almost 20 years old now and will start after 3 pulls EVERY time no matter how cold. You can pick up a used lazer drill from D Rock for about $100. Well worth the money.
He can not just bolt a Lazer blade onto that auger bit, he would have to buy a nex bit as described above.
Yes you can sharpen a chipper with a file, I sharpen my Jiffy chipper yearly. It is a combo of the blade and the tip that have some criteria (angles) that need to be kept close to the spec. I am not sure what SM uses for angles but Jiffy was a 15 degree angle on the chipper blade.
Unless someone else has scewed up the angles attempting to sharpen it in the past you should be able to copy the angle buy holding a fine cut file parallel to the angles that are currently on the blade and point.
Got him a new chipper blade and she plows through the ice now!!! 
When sharpening a chipper blade make sure you also check and sharpen the digging point. I have seen where the digging point was dull with a new blade and it would not cut when the point was sharpened with a file she went right through like butter.
