I can’t say it was the target species of the day, but Kris Lindahl with Edina Reality and I put the barbs to a couple SUMO whitefish yesterday!! Absolute GIANTS!! Heck the one I’m holding had a simply huge hump on it’s back. These fish are a blast to tangle with on light tackle. Keep in mind these Whitefish are excellent tablefare should you happen to lace one up.

Whitefish will predominately feed on emerging bug hatches or mud larvea and are commonly found on large deep basins in the late ice timeframe. Bug hatches in the mud will attract Whitefish, Tullibee and Crappies. Thus when we target Crappies we quite often stumble across these magnificent fighting machines. It is a good idea to go small when fishing Whitefish. Often times anglers can’t figure out why that seemingly large mark will not devour a slightly larger presentation. Though you certainly can catch these fish with different presentations a small diamond jig packed with Euros will easily be sucked in to that small mouth. Keep in mind the difference between Tullibee and Whitefish. Whitefish……..YUMMY……”Tullies”……….YUCKY!! A Whitefish will have a rolled over nose where a Tullibee predominately a smoking fish because of it’s oily nature will have a mouth shaped like a tarpon. Your Crappie gear will be tested in earnest with these Large Shiner like fish.

Though you certainly can smoke these whitefish they are flat out awesome fried fish. The meat will turn snow white. My buddies would trade Walleyes and Crappies for Whitefish any day of the week.

Precisely what we said Bee!! The biggest Whitefsih measured 27 1/4 inches missing the state record by 1 1/4 inches. It was built like a mule as you can see.

About 3 years ago I unkowingly let a state record Whitefish go as it would have surpassed the Leech Lake record by over 2 inches in length. Didn’t ever weigh it, but would guess it was around the 14lb mark. Funny thing is we really don’t catch lots of them while in the peak of our Crappie adventures we might get 6 or 7 a day. I will admit after learning what the record actually was I felt a bit sick to my stomache. Who knows we might get another crack at it.

Here’s a pic of that bruiser. I call it my closet record!! Good enough for me.

I here you on the close record. I got that 17in. crappie last October and it was 3lb2oz on my wifes scale. State record is 3lb4oz. I should have had it weighed. The person who I took it for mount lives next to the seafood market and I never gave it a thought to get it checked on a official scale.

It’s just something a guy rarely considers. As for Whitefish to be frank I really had little knowledge of the growth potential. NOW I know!!

BTW FANTASTIC CRAPPIE BEE!! True “DONK” My personal biggest is 16.5 and a true 17 is in the cross hairs!!
