Do these fly reels have a decent drag system?

Depends on the model. I run Okuma SLV 2/3’s and it has a great drag. Although I normally have the drag set very light, I use my finger as the drag.

Yes. Fly reels have great drag. They have to as normal use for flyfishing you use tippit which is very delicate usually running as small as 1lb.

Probably the best system for tough bite bull and slab panfish. Go for it!

If you normally fish shallower then 15ft, I’d go for it. Any deeper and I shy away from using my fly reel setups as it takes too long to get down and reel up.

What brads and models have been working well for the ice fishing application?

I am looking into buying a pair of reels, but I do not need top end stuff as I only fish for panfish a handfull of times each season.

Frabill makes a reel that you can get from Thorne Bros for 45 dollars. That includes line. Then Okuma has a good reel as well as courtland and then the Ross Flystart is an option too. Other wise you could go with the schooly style reel too. Thats for fly reels.
If you want spinning reels look at the Shimanos or Ticas

Depending on how one holds their set up. It’s possible to pinch line in finger to use as drag or merely finger press the spool for drag.

Okuma 2/3 or 4/5 have been the favorite for the price. The new Fraibil fly reel looks very similar. I will have one for Xmas this year. I’ll report how it works when I get it. I’m guessing it will be on par with the Okuma.

Cabelas has the prestige plus 1 for 49.99 its compact and very smooth with a nice paddle handle might be a option I’m in a toss up between this and slv 2/3 the frabill reel seems ok till you compare it to something of better quality for same price just my opinion if I’m spending money on something ill opt to pay a little more for something that will last and hold up

I’ll know more about the Frabill reel after I can use it but it is designed for ice fishing. I’m assuming its gonna be able to take some abuse as well as the cold. I will report my findings once I get a chance to use it.

Just saying.. But there are nice reels out there. I like my Okuma a lot so we will see how it compares on the ice.

It will be interesting to see what everyone thinks. I’m in the same boat.
