Ice auger recommendations

    Hi all,

I am driving an explorer and cannot continue with the jiffy gas leaks/smell due to my wife getting migraines from the smell. I am looking for a cheaper set up. I have looked at many different options. I think I would prefer a drill/hammer drill setup just due to being able to use the drill for other uses. I have also looked at a cordless mud mixer set up via harbor freight. So my questions are:

I have a metal hand auger, the jiffy auger, and a drill conversion kit. So do I use one of those augers/conversion kits ornos it better to go with onenod these type augers- https://share.temu.com/IlIy3PbYcrC

And what cheaper option drill do you recommend (mine does not have enough torque)? I was looking at greenworks (as I already have the batteries/charger system for my string trimmer): https://www.greenworkstools.com/products/24v-cordless-battery-1-2-hammer-drill-w-4-0ah-battery-charger

As far as the mud mixer option this is what it would look like: https://www.harborfreight.com/20v-brushless-cordless-12-in-mud-mixer-tool-only-58152.html
    Plus batteries and charger

    Thanks for any recommendations

If you ask me anything from temu is a waste of money. that green works battery will not last long.

Temu was just an example. They sell the same ones(Vevor) on Amazon. Battery wise, like I said I have the system so I would just buy a bigger battery and use the one that came with the drill with the string tree trimmer. https://a.co/d/dSg8UDy That said I am not beholden to that choice if better suggestions are offered.

For how much you’d be spending I’d look into just getting a 24V Strikemaster.

They’re starting to go on sale new for sub-$300 and I’m sure you could find a used one for around $200, especially later this season.

What B-man said except i would look for a 40V if you drill many holes.

Fleet Farm currently has the Strikemaster 24v 8″ for $299. If you spend $300 and order online with pick up at the store you can use coupon code Winter50off for $50 off.

Heck, splurge and spend $500 and use coupon code Winter100off for $100 off.

I agree with looking into the battery strike master. When trying to match cordless drills to augers, there’s a lot of drills that just won’t work. They might even have good torque #s, but when combined with an auger and cold they just won’t be any good at all. So, instead of upgrading your battery arsenal and conversion pieces, you might be money ahead to get something already proven.
I use an 18v cordless Milwaukee and 12.0 batteries with a Clam plate and laser auger. I love it more than the Strike master 24v or 40v. But it costs more.

PP is spot on.It will cost more in the end to piece a unit together than to buy one made for the job,

I have a 20-volt Dewalt drill and 8″ Jiffy Torch bit set up. I am really happy with it.

A drill and that jiffy auger bit from your jiffy will suck, don’t jiffy auger turn backwards. So you’ll be fighting your chuck. If you want a good deal I have a 8 inch lite flight on a clam plate for 150 bucks that hasn’t sold yet. In great shape, just add your own drill.

This winter, I started using the 12 amp battery from my Milwaukee M18 chain saw. Mofo rips. I have some 6 amps as back ups if needed. Last week I drilled 14 holes in 18-20″ of ice and was down one bar on the 12 amp. I have an 8″ lite flite bit.

I tell ya, speed isn’t everything, but even with 2 year old blades on the laser, this thing eats ice like Joey Chestnut pounding hotdogs! jester

If you really want the drill/auger combo, I would look into either a DeWalt or Milwaukee drill and buy the rig that Bearcat has for sale.
With those drills you’ll have options for battery upgrades as well as stores that sell them should you need one.

The Torch bit turns the right way for a drill. I found an 8 inch on the Jiffy site for $79. https://jiffyonice.com/products/ripper-torch-certified

I thought he was talking about taking a bit off his jiffy power head and attach it to a drill.

I love my E40 and I have quick attach if you want to use a drill.

It was like $450 for a 8″ poly with spare battery.

Cheaper is not better in this case. Buy once cry once. Long term spend the money up front on a good electric auger and be done. You will spend more buying cheap and then tossing it in the garbage and buying what you should have in the first place.
