How to Rig my Electronics

I own an Alumacraft Competitor 175 with a full windshield. Currently i have 1 fish finder on the boat. Its a Humminbird DI unit. don’t remember the number of the model but its a 5 year old unit 7 inch screen i believe. Works fine. This year i purchased a Garmin 93sv UHD. I have an appointment setup with the Boat Center in a few weeks to have them mount the new unit on the dash. The question is what should i do with the Humminbird? The logical answer seems to be mount it on the bow and that is my current plan. But i rarely fish out of the bow. I do have a 9.9 kicker motor that i use to troll with sometimes. Maybe the Humminbird should go in the stern close to that? Hell maybe i run both units side by side on the dash if there is room…

The other question is where to mount the transducer. my buddy is suggesting that if i mount the Humminbird on the bow i should mount the transducer to the trolling motor to avoid any possible interference between it and the Garmin unit. Is interference a concern? What advantages or disadvantages are there in mounting the transducer onto the trolling motor?

I plan on relying on the advice of the Boat Center to guide me but thought i would ask here to for those that have some experience using two units on a boat and two separate brand units at that. Maybe the answer is i don’t use the Humminbird on the boat at all if interference is going to be an issue? IDK.

Just poking around for feedback before i get the boat rigged up.

What bow mount do you have? Humminbird can sync up nicely with the right Minnkota bow mount. That’s where I’d put it, even if you don’t use it much. Lots of people have transducers on a bow mount and on the transom and use them both at the same time. There shouldn’t be any issues there.

If you don’t have a good use for it you could always sell it too. Even though its 5 years old, fishing equipment is in pretty high demand at this time.

I run bow and dash mount Garmins – 93 on the dash and a 73 on the bow. I rarely use the bow mounted but it’s nice when there is another person in the boat. Then you can have a couple different setups. Run SI/DI on the dash and 2D on the bow. I usually run Livescope on the bow so I can peak at it if needed.

I don’t think they will interfere but the TBC guys will know. I’m not sure how you can mount the ducer to the TM unless the ducer is built in. I’ve never seen anyone run a graph by the kicker on a windshield boat. Doesn’t it steer from the helm?

I think you’ll find that if you fish alone (unless you are a bass guy on the bow all the time) you rely on a single graph on the dash 90% of the time.

Mount it on dash and use for mapping, that way your garmin can be dedicated to si, di

that was a thought and sounds like its getting some fanfare. would be nice considering that i have all of my waypoints already on my humminbird…..

I am having my 93SV UHD installed as we speak. I talked to him about it and he said that the Garmin can run next to my Lowrance HDS at the helm and ducer can be next to each other on the same board, because the Garmin runs on a different frequency. So that’s the way I’m going. I think your bird is going to work the same but they should know. I figured either way I’m ok because I already have a mount and wiring in the bow with my Terrova.

Crappie, if you’re doing that and only want mapping, you only need power and can plug into your 12v cigarette plug. If you want it still linked to bow mount you’ll need to run more wires

what kind of boat do you run John? If you have time snap a photo when its done and post. I see a lot of bass boats running two units on the dash but not a lot of full windshield tin boats

that’s a good point Craig. i don’t link up with my trolling motor as it is now. the only features i really use now are spot lock and controlling the direction with the remote. i don’t think i need the Humminbird to do that

Yeah I can take a pic and shoot it to you or post it. I have a 2008 Tracker Targa V175 it is gonna be tight I’m having the Garmin on the right maybe slanted toward me slightly and the HDS 7 will hopefully sit just above the gauges. He suggested using a larger ram mount that will split to hold both of them. Fingers crossed it looks good and works. Who needs to see where there going anyway! woot

Have you done this my buddy claims the bird guys told him he could not run his without the ducer, which I always thought was BS. Does anyone know where to get a wiring adapter with a 12 volt plug for the birds?

I run a hds7 touch and an elite ti 9″ touch on my Alumacraft 185 full windshield dash. I have them on ram mounts and with a ball at my trolling motor so I can move one up there when needed. I only move it if someone is up there as I never fish from the bow. The locators arent hooked together. The only problem I have with that is if I mark a way point on 2d/si/di it doesn’t transfer to my mapping unit.

That’s false, you can run the graph without a ducer connected. I run a helix 7 and 10 on the dash. I use the 7 solely for mapping and that only has a power cord and networking cable plugged into it. I wire all of my graphs to a fuse panel that is controlled by a master power switch on the starting battery. Not sure why you would want wiring to go though the 12v outlet.

To run his in my boat if he has better way points on certain lakes. Lowrance makes a 12 volt adapter so you can use it in the truck or where ever you want.

i called and made my appointment 2 weeks ago. At that time they said the earliest they could get me in was April 7th. I opted to schedule it out a few weeks as i wasn’t sure when i would be pulling the boat out of storage

John, yes I have done it, works fine. But if you want to share waypoints between units you need to wire it in to your hub too. I’m doing this now so then I only need one map chip. If I drop a waypoint on SI it will show up on my mapping unit

Ehhh I dunno. The mapping on this new 9-inch touchscreen Garmin is going to be so far ahead of that 698 or whatever he has. The user experience of panning around a large lake with the Garmin is like heaven. Heck, even your phone mounted on a RAM mount would be superior to that oler Bird in my opinion.

Honestly I would turn the Bird into an ice fishing unit. I like a nice clean console area, and I’m not going to settle for outdated mapping when I have a superior product right there. My 2 cents.

I agree to some extent Dirty. My plan instead at least in theory is to use my Lowrance for it’s 2d sonar as it is one of the best in the class and use the Garmin for SI and mapping. We will see this weekend hopefully.
