Harvesting firewood from public land

There is a section of 80 acres of public land just down the road from my house (Duluth area) that was logged over this past winter. They are done logging and there is a lot of “scrap” wood that they left that must have not met their standards. It is actually pretty upsetting how much wood they cut down and left. A lot of it is good firewood and I would like to take a truck load and bring a load home to use for outdoor fires over the summer. To be legal, I believe I need to get a special fuelwood permit from the DNR but haven’t been able to find anything about it. I believe this permit allows you to harvest 10-12 cords in one year (obviously way more cordage than I need). Does anybody know anything about these permits and how to obtain one?

I believe the rules may have changed recently due to emerald ash borer and other invasive bugs that can be transported. I don’t think you can move firewood any longer, but all I could find was this:

    “Firewood
•Protect our state forests- don’t move firewood.
•You may gather wood that is dead and lying on the ground for onsite campfire use.”

However I did find this so perhaps just check with your local forestry office:

i see so much wood getting hauled its not funny. as far as hauling or transporting i beleive its legally ok within the area your harvested the wood.

with that being said, and unless the rules changed you need to get a permit from the forestry dept and they give you a map of what they call blowdown areas you are allowed to take wood from. any areas not considered you could get in trouble with.

this was in itasca county the last time i checked into it and the pemit was good for 6 months.

Were I live there is federal land and county / state land. I get a permit for each. The federal is much more restrictive on how, were, and amount. I get my federal permit at the regional D.N.R. office. I get the my county permit from the local D.N.R. office. Hope this helps

The land in question is state land.

With the big storms we had in the Duluth area over the last year, there is a lot of blow down areas.

You will have no problems harvesting that, check with your township also. They might offer permits

I’d call or email the DNR. If it’s state land they will be able to give you any info you need.
