At one of the deeper woods spots I sat during bow season I heard a few calling to each other multiple times. In the still quiet of the woods it was loud as hell.
The pictures (one normal and the other is the same just magnified) are from a different area of one that flew in at dusk. I was in a stand on a slope so it was almost eye level with me.

We usually have quite a few barred owls in our suburban neighborhood. I love having them around, but they are loud, and at 3 a.m. with the windows open, they are annoying. Anytime I’m not sleeping, I love listening to them, though.
I woke up in the middle of the night a few years ago and saw one sitting on a shepherd’s hook holding a bird feeder. It was snatching mice that came out to eat the fallen seed.
When we had a hobby farm a pair of owls would appear every other year and stay for about a month. When they left there wasn’t a squirrel or bunny on the place.
