Anyone been out on Green Bay recently? My dad and I are heading up Thursday and fishing Friday-Sunday. Staying in Oconto. We were up last year at the same time and didn’t do great but not bad. That was our first time getting up there, so there was certainly a learning curve. We ended up fishing the Menominee last year. It was insanely windy too so that didn’t help. Looks like the water is going to be colder than last year. Will be fun whether the fish cooperate or not!

The bite for us was not good. 3 days fishing, 4 walleyes, 2 northern, small mouth bass, sucker, and a perch. Bite for everyone else sounded very similar. There was another boat that was fishing with us last week that is back down there this weekend and they are still struggling. Maybe the water will warm enough for you to get the fish moving. Most areas we looked if you saw a group of four or five fish that was pretty good. Most areas that had been good in previous years, were not holding any fish or one here or there. I think they are scattered out in the deeper water getting ready to move in to do their thing. The fish we did get all were on hair. Not a sniff on anything else we tried.

April 18, 2025 at 6:26 pm #2331173Fished today as day 1. Caught 5 fish, all 23-25. All of them came on ripping raps. Fish were really scattered and didn’t see anyone tearing them up. Of course it’s Green Bay, so there was nets flying all day but nobody consistently. Water temp was 48 out of Oconto.
April 19, 2025 at 9:03 pm #2331288Today was slower than yesterday. Caught 3 walleye, and didn’t catch one until 4 pm-ish. Two at 26” and one at 23. All of the fish around 10’.
On the bright side, my dad caught the fish of a lifetime. A 50” Muskie. We don’t have a big enough scale (never Muskie fish) but we guessing around 45#. I caught a 50 when I was younger that was 35# and this was way bigger. Hopefully the picture works.

April 20, 2025 at 10:16 am #2331355Yeah, we love the encase box!
Thanks finny. I know that horizontal is better but, when you try to tell your dad stuff like that sometimes it doesn’t go over well. Another pic below, I’m certain that fish was over 30#. Maybe not 45 # though.

Posts: 1079April 20, 2025 at 3:49 pm #2331394The In-fisherman chart says 50 inch Musky approximately 39 lbs.
In-fisherman is generous and assumes you caught a fatty. A 39 lb 50 inch musky has a 25 inch girth which is a tank.
That thing is gonna be a giant. Small head. Growing fast.
April 20, 2025 at 4:42 pm #2331401So with the forecasted east wind at 10-15 and some gusts higher, we drove over to sturgeon bay this morning. Talk about a different world. I knew it was different , but I didnt know how much. We could see bottom in 14’. That is completely out of my comfort zone. We didn’t catch a fish, nor saw anyone else catch one. We came back to oconto to see what it was like. There was two trailers in the lot and they both came in as we were there. We didn’t attempt. Turns out we should have gotten up real early and beat the wind and called it quits early.

With all the videos out there showing catching fish non stop, one would think you could go there and limit out in an hr or two. You can actually, just not most of the time. When it’s on, it’s special, when it’s not, it’s a grind.
The clear water doesn’t help, and at times I get humbled and come home empty, but not to fear, for me it’s a long 5 months to fish and enjoy the area. I find myself motoring across to the Oconto waters more and more lately, just more comfortable fishing the stained waters there and there is more room to be away from other boaters.
