Garage storage / Shelving

Closing on a new house in Juky and was wondering if anyone had any ideas or stuff they’ve successfully used in the past for garage layouts?

My brother in law just did his with a lot of cabinets but I don’t know if I’m crazy about those. I guess I don’t really see the benefit of cabinets over traditional shelving? Cleaner look I guess?

Anyways, any ideas or layouts you have used would be appreciated.

I have a mix of cabinets and open shelves.
The big difference is if you sand or spray paint or anything like that,
or just plain old blown around dirt,
you don’t have to wipe off everything stored in the cabinets.

Don’t rush into anything. You have a small garage and need to plan to your needs.

I’ve done a couple K in shelving to 80K in cabinets, it comes down to what/how your going to use the space.

My preference when a clean look isnt the primary attribute, is the 16′ x 24″ lamtron with Vertical track and heavy duty brackets. Pricey for initial set up, but you can easily customize your width and height for your needs. When your needs change, its as simple and changing the configuration of the brackets and the shelves

Small garage? This is a garage for a house and not a separate, dedicated work area, but this is a decent sized garage I’d say.

I have a mix of both in my garage. My garage is 24’x44′. The first 22′ is boat and wife’s car parking, so it has a little bit of shelving along the walls and hooks for shovels, brooms and such. The back is my ‘work area’. I’ve only got cabinets above the work benches, the rest is shelving.

It comes down to what you use your garage for. I use mine for storing duck hunting and fishing gear and also working on ATV’s, dust is minimal. If you do a lot of woodworking, cabinets may be your better option (dust). Do a lot of metalwork? You’ll want a cabinet for your flammables.

Cabinets are nice, but you’ll quickly find limitations. Yes, it’s nice not getting dust all over stuff inside, but being limited to things that fit inside with the door closed can be a challenge. I like the shelving more than my cabinets, but keeping odds and ends in cabinets like spray paint, fertilizer sprays, bug juice and such is nice. Some fertilizer sprays and granules can smell pretty potent, cabinet doors are nice to contain it a bit.

And as always, there is no such thing as too big of a garage…

I have a little bit of everything in mine.
where I have the boat backed in that side wall, I have shelves accessible from the boat to add\remove seats, muskie tackle, landing net (hanger), cooler and whatever else I want in and out.

I got some cheaper plastic shelves cause I had a space in between the gun safe and steps going into the house where they fit perfectly. I also have cabinets for the liquid stuff (oil, spray cans) and hardware items like nails and screws.

On a side note, I hate how builders like to set the 3rd stall back 2ft, give me 2 more feet and make the front flush.

I’m assuming the area labeled “Unexcavated” is the garage? Jealous is the first thing that comes to mind! I’d love a 40′ deep garage.

I like cabinets for the less used items to keep them cleaner, but I prefer shelves for the frequently used tools/parts/etc when used as a workshop.

My cabinets are hung on double French cleats to allow for reconfiguring the setups by just emptying the cabinets and picking them up off the cleats.

I use both also. I use the tops, sides, inside doors and bottom to hang stuff. Squares and levels on sides, cords under, saw blades and grinding wheels hanging inside the doors.

The best thing I did was make sliding shelves under the work bench. That way there’s no getting down on your hands and knees looking for your stuff. Use full extention drawer slides mine are rated for 150 pounds.

Sorry if the word small offended you. Next time I’ll try to be a bit more politically correct…. point is, by the time you park vehicles, lawn mower and other crap, you’ll find it isn’t as big as you might think. I’ve been designing & building houses and garages for over 30 years. Very few garages are ever big enough.

I put two shelves across the back bud out area of my garage around the peremiter. would have a lot less storage space with cabinets. I used plywood cut the sheets and heavy duty brackets from menards when they had the 11% off going. pretty sure you could walk on the shelves if you wanted.

The one thing I like about the storage I created in my garage is the very top shelf against the ceiling. It is an open shelf going around the perimeter of the garage. I made the shelf just low enough to place clear totes on it. It made a lot more room and is easy to grab the tote and pull them down. I put stuff that I don’t use much in the totes and the totes keep the sawdust out. Over where the truck bed would be when I back it in I kicked out the shelf further to place camping stuff. I just park the truck and stand in the bed and fill. Makes getting ready for the trip quick and easy.

I took advantage of a Sears 30-40% sale many years ago and outfitted my entire garage with Gladiator garage track and cabinets/accessories. I love the flexibility of easily moving stuff around if needed. I took several months thinking about each piece I wanted and where it would go, so the more you plan, the better the final product will be…I basically have 2 setups, 1 for winter boat storage that fits the boat, 4 wheeler and trailer in like Tetris and another for summer use with the boat out of it…

I also installed 6 of the hung from ceiling storage units that hang over the garage doors, each one is 4’x 4′, you can get them for like $35 from amazon.com

Tuma, I as well have this style of shelving and love it, it runs the back wall of my current 3 car (wide) garage and I plan to run it in a my new garage as well. I have two shelfs that run the back however the top one just below the ceiling enough to get the large plastic totes up there and the next one below the first shelf enough to fit them as well. you can store so much in that generally unused area. It is also cheap shelving.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

The ceiling is 12′ so also really interested in ideas for overhead storage.
