Pflueger Reel Sizes?

All right guys, I’m a pretty avid user of Shimano reels. My most used rods all have 2500 Stradic CI4s on them, but just the other day my buddy picked up a reel that I thought felt pretty darn nice and the price was GREAT! It was a Pflueger President XT. I thought it felt really nice, and for the price you even got a spare spool. Well, my question is this; I need to get two reels, both will be for my vertical jigging rods. One rod is my sweetheart, my first premium rod a SJR 721 GLX, and the new one, which will be arriving after tax season, the 6’3″ Legend Extreme MXF. Now being the 721 is more of a light duty rod, I was thinking that the size 25 Pflueger should be ample, but I was thinking about getting the 30 for the 6’3″ Extreme. I was wondering what you all thought? I do like the fact that the 25 is about 2 ounces lighter, and being I use super lines, I don’t know if I’ll really miss the line capacity or not. Any input would be great and thank you in advance! Steve

while the Pflueger President XT is a nice reel for your premium rod

I would take a look at the Pflueger Supreme XT or just the Pflueger Supreme

it has better features for the money

I would go with the 30 series as the 25’s are small in size

the 30 series supremes come in at around 7 1/2 oz

just an idea for your really nice rod

Couple other factors for you to weigh out Steve. If the majority of your reels are one brand,it is nice to be able to swap spools with any of them.

Capacity, not sure that the capacity is so much of an issue,as you can manage that with or without backing, but spool diameter can impact line memory and or casting distance. On a exclusive vert rod,not a big deal.

Wear n tear on a small frame reel typically will show itself much sooner than the larger 2500 framed reels, especially with you using those heavy weight floating jigheads :]….so just some other factors for you to think about on which application suits your needs best.I know you take great pride in your gear and I would recommend you check the balance of the combos before deciding!

I thought the Presidents were good reels too,so I bought several. At that time I had several brand-new Diawa Excellers….The Presidents are wearing out,the Excellers are not.

The Presidents are being replaced by Excellers.

I am diehard Shimano, but the pflueger supremes have lured me away. So far, so good. Like anything, you take of your stuff and it lasts. I don’t know about the presidents-might be a durability difference there v/s the supremes. With the lighter weight, the supremes balance out very well with a lightweight rod blank.

I crappie fish pretty hard. I’d go with presidents or supremes. Arbor let me down, I twice had to tear into it and tighten loose things up. I beat my small presidents all winter on ice then they get to go on steelhead rods for open water crappie. They just need to put a large spool on a president.

I with blufloyd, my presidents see battle winter and summer and there have been no issues. They get torn down, cleaned, and re-lubed before ice season and after ice season. Someimtes in the middle of the hard water season if needed.
