HSO, IDO and indepthfishing.com

So I was doing some research on the new Contour Elite software, and I found a review on another site (HSO). While reading the review, a link labeled “In Depth Fishing” caught my eye. I was thinking that maybe HSO and IDO had partnered up. Nope, HSO has a indepthfishing.com site. Is this a hint at a potential partnership between HSO and IDO, or is there something stinky in how HSO has set up their website domains?

Anyone can register whatever domain they want as long as it’s not taken. A few years ago, it was common place to hold names “hostage” for a fee. It’s still done, but not as wide spread as it once was.

    I understand how domains work.

I guess I find it funny that HSO has their fishing and hunting sites under domains that are quite different from the company name and so close to what IDO would use.

At my last job, a competitor of ours had a domain name very similar to ours. What they did was find out all our sales staff email addresses. Then, they setup actual emails for [email protected] or [email protected].

That way if any clients accidentally sent them an email, they would then start trying to sell that client their services. We looked into legal action I guess. Nothing we could do as they weren’t really impersonating anyone.

Part of me said “nice move” the other part said I’m glad I don’t work for a business who has to use such underhanded tactics to get business. It’s sad what is done in the name of business now days.

    Agreed.

It’s a smart strategic move on the web, but probably a bad business decision as a whole. When you consider how small the hunting/fishing community really is and that the target audience is the same for both companies, it probably wasn’t a very smart move to so blatantly attempt to steal website traffic. The hunting/fishing community is (for the most part) a pretty respectful and helpful bunch and aren’t afraid to turn their backs on people/companies in the wake of shady stuff like this.

Stay out of the car business then….

Every CJD dealer around the area, has so many St Cloud tags in their website….. its ridiculous. I guess if I googled something and you represented your business being in the town I searched, and in fact, you were 30 miles away… I’d cross your azz off the list first !!!

If you truly feel that way, sent a note to Rick and let him know it. (You and anyone else who reads this.)

    [email protected]

Rick knows exactly how I persnally feel about the way he does things. Ask him for a copy of my last 2-3 e-mails.

Oh, one thing to remember….. The old saying >>>

“Don’t argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

I believe there are rules now that make domain squatting difficult. So I couldn’t just grab 3M.com and hope to extort money from them.

You are exactly right Pug. I remember when we were only dial up and only a few people actually had websites. It was pretty common to go buy http://www.pepsi.com and then hold it ransom. Funny thing, suddenly legislation came along to prevent the blatant stealing that was going on.

    And that shoe fits.

I know all the tactics that site uses to get them a high search ranking. But I guess they are not illegal. Then again, neither is Counter SEO

Anyone a venture capitalist here? I’d love to start a domain parking business.

Some people choose to take the ‘Easier” but less ethical way of increasing business, by trying to capitalize on the succes of other businesses.Rather then building their own business, capable of standing on its own merits. As my Grandma always used to say ” The Cream Always Rises to the Top!!” Of course Grandpa used to say ” Sometimes Sh_t floats as well!!” Not implying anything about any party here , but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what is being done in this situation.

I wonder what James’ opinion is on this. I noticed it the other week over there and thought that it was awfully close to In-Depth Outdoors / IDOfishing.

I noticed this an long time ago, shady tactics… Now hso never wronged me, but they are shady, and rarely do I every post there. I think I’m a pretty good judge of character, I only had to meet rock once to know he’s mort the type of person I like… I’ve met most staff on here, and I’ve yet to feel that way about a single one, amongst a bunch of other members.

Years after I met rick, I continue to hear stories and examplesul supporting my initial feelings add this to the list…

Happy to be here happy they’ll have me and I’ll leave I it at that.

My opinion…? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In this case a POOR imitation and considering the source I guarantee it wasn’t intended to be flattering… but I’ll take it.

Now, the industry’s opinion of those that do such things is very low. And that’s why those that behave in this manner receive the budgetary crumbs when it comes to sponsor support.

You reap what you sow. And I do get a kick out of watching some of the “competitors” flop about and make a mess of things. This type of behavior actually makes my job so much easier.

I PMed James about a month ago when I came across this site.I thought it was a real crappy way to drum up bussiness but not as bad as when he emailed me and asked me to join.I asked where he got my email address from. His reply was from my profile off this site.

Integrity will always win out in the long run. Course if you don’t care what people think of you as a person and businessman then I guess other approaches might work.

The way to deal with this is not in sending a nastygram to the offender. You send it to the offender’s sponsors. Tell them you refuse to support any business that associates with anyone that conducts business in this manner.
