Well you can usually rent or borrow a code reader from a auto part store, I borrowed one the other day to look for a code, in their parking lot, didn’t cost me a penny. Of course if you can’t get to their parking lot, that may not help you.
Other than that can’t help ya

January 18, 2009 at 7:50 am #738610When was the last time you changed your vehicles FUEL FILTER ?? Had a 96′ chevy Suburban that (service engine soon) light would illuminate on dash, changed fuel filter yearly haven’t had any problems since. If your fuel flow is restricted it will signal the vehicles computer system. “hairjig”

If it is an oxygen sensor, doing this may clear it for a while, but the warning light will come back in a few months.
Good luck, and don’t get a speeding ticket.

January 18, 2009 at 8:27 pm #738704A blinking dummy light is not good, usually means something needs attention asap. As mentioned, most auto parts stores will read codes for free, they want to sell you parts which is ok. O2’s usually give you a steady light, I’d get the codes read soon.

Good advice
A lamp on constantly, is basically FYI. A blinking light means, something is happening and it’s not too good to keep using me.

January 19, 2009 at 1:55 pm #738888Chevey/GMC Check Engine lights are all tied into the emision controls and fuel flow. Is this a gasoline or Diesel engine?
Last Wednesday night I had the same thing happen driving home from work with my diesel. Was a combination of fuel filter was expired, air filter was getting dirty. Neither was totally the problem, but with -15 degrees, engine running much colder than normal and fuel & air problem…gave me greif!
January 19, 2009 at 3:24 pm #738926Sounds really stupid. but try taking off your gas cap and reseating and tighen it again. sometimes that is all it takes. that is the first thing my mechanic says when I call with a sensor issue. and actually worked a few times for some reason. might as well try as won’t cost you anything. and he says that is the one of the first thing mechanics do.

January 19, 2009 at 7:07 pm #739041Correct me if Im wrong but Check Engine Light wont go away on Its own you have to reset it your self. On my alero I replace fuel regulator and then disconnected battery for a couple minutes. Check Engine light came on a week later and I just reset it again and havent seen it for 6 months.
January 19, 2009 at 7:20 pm #739047Not exactly sure on Chevy, but I believe all are basically the same. What Broncos guy is talking about is, a fuel evap leak code. Your fuel system “tests” itself for leaks periodically. If you fuel your vehicle with the engine running and it happens to run a leak detection test while doing it, it will turn on the check engine light. It will not however “blink” at you for this. Also a plain old loose gas cap, which is loose when the test is run, will turn it on. Thats where a tech tells you to remove the cap and reinstall, listen for the “click” twice, it is like a torque wrench, when its tight it will click and bypass. After I belive 6 “passed” leak tests, the light will turn off, but it will have stored the code for a fuel evap leak in the module affected.

January 19, 2009 at 7:28 pm #739051yep. and I have never heard of the “check engine” light blinking. did you have a recent oil change? if so when they reset that it blinks 3 times. maybe they did not reset it right? and that would be turning the key on , not the engine over, and within 5 seconds pump the breaks 3 times and that resets that one.

January 19, 2009 at 9:11 pm #739096blinking cel are usualy a very bad thing,I had a car once that blinked a cel, it ended needing a new engine…. In that case it was indicating a misfire.
January 19, 2009 at 10:48 pm #739134They will blink, and as Nick said, very catastrophic to keep driving. Todays vehicles are pretty smart. Transmissions wil go into Limp mode (won’t shift above 2nd gear) to protect themselves if something is not right. Check engine lights will flash. When we get a customer calling with a “flashing” check engine light, we advise them to tow it in… it’s not worth possibly having to buy a new engine.

If it’s a soft code the light will turn off after so many key cycles and it won’t be retrievable for a scan tool to get the DTC that was set.
Hard codes the light will remain on and a reset of some sort with a Scan tool or battery disconnection will be needed to clear the Trouble code and light.

On my 01 Tahoe you have to pump the gas pedal 3 times to reset oil change light.
