My yard looks like I’ve been shearing sheep. Anybody know what good cottonwoods do other than being a tree?

I know my yard was white last week but all of the ones by my house are hopefully done. It was snowing last week though

I had all kinds of fun trying to keep the cotton off my line and baits on the river last week.

I’m with you: kill ’em all!

I believe they are mostly used for making pallets and some furniture.

Make sure that you keep any flame far away from big piles of them. They’ll ignite like gasoline .

Its kinda fun to burn them though

I’m with you guys. That white s**t sure does make for a messy day of shore fishing. Maybe someone ought to come up with the million dollar idea, a device that gets that stuff off your line. Love2Fish. KILL ALL COTTONWOODS

Whew! I though you were talking about THE COTTONWOOD TREE!

We have pine trees…the pollen is so thick I called the EPA a few years ago thinking it was sulpher coming from the Bayport power plant. Everything…and I mean Everything outside is covered with a yellow powder.

I have heard that in the fall when the leaves start to fall you can kill any tree. You need to tap into the tree with your cordless drill.(3/8″ bit) Make sure you drill in as deep as your bit will let you. Place some Round up weed and brush killer in the hole. Once the hole is full seal the hole with wax or a piece of tape. As the tree pulls all moisture and nutrients to the roots it will also take the round up with it. The next spring watch as the branches start to dry up.

Couldn’t somebody just magically turn my huge cottonwoods into beautiful majestic oaks or maples or hickory or something nicer? Please!

Try using TORODON RTU, it is for killing trees via a cut surface…..saw mark, axe mark, or my brothers favorite….50cal gunshot and a funnel!

No cottonwoods here but the helicopter trees are going nuts also. Sure is fun fun throwing the seeds in the air and watching them spin down but clean up is a bugger.

And what quality of cottonwood shade makes it preferable to other types of shade trees?

A guy a few houses down from us has 2 huge cotton woods for shade for the pool. Not a good plan.

Has anyone else noticed the fish taking the helicopter seeds off the surface the last few weeks? Could of swore a walleye came up next to the boat on the croix last week and grabbed one.

My late father-in-law was convinced he was going to kill his cottonwoods by driving somekind of metal into the trees. I can’t remember what it was but now I’ll have to drive over to the old house and see if they’re dead or not.

OK you guys….enough about killing cottonwoods. They’re a darn hardy tree and without them half of North and South Dakota would be void of trees. I planted the hybrid cottonwoods when I moved to Mn and they are cottonless/seedless. I have the big beautiful majestic trees, and NO COTTON!! I personally like ’em….like some of the guys said, all trees have pollen and/or seeds unless they are hybrids. I can tell you the oaks and basswoods in my yard are a lot messier than the cottonwoods.

    Amen! I’ll second that one!

However, I prefer cold weather over hot weather.

I’m all for the cottonless seedless ones, but after today I agree they must die, no less than 10 minutes after reading this, I left my house, driving down the road, all the sudden I start choking a little, something stuck in my throat, my mouth instantly fills with spit, enough spit to make a basset hound jealous, I wasn’t eactly sure what was going on, until I coughed up the unusually large chunk of cotton , yup, you got my support, lets kill ’em, lets kill ’em all.

I like the way some of you guys think! Me being a tree trimmer! You guys hit them with your axe and drills instead of cutting them down, then I will come when its dead and dangerous and cost twice as much to cut down..

I doubt I have a hybrid…but I’ve been told that I have a “female” cottonwood in my front yard. No cotton.

When the seeds are dropping from the birch, basswood, elm and oak in our yard…my favorite wife wants them all cut down.

I guess she’s not as happy with the vacuum I bought her for Christmas as I thought she was.

We have about a dozen big cottonwoods at least 4′ in dia. with in a block of me. I drove up the street by my neighbors house because i had too look at what i thought i was seeing, he was useing a yard blower to blow all the cotton seeds out into the street and there was this big cloud of seeds flying throught he air as he walked. He eventually blew them into the street and a ne. wind we had that afternoon blew them all back into his yard that afternoon. His grass was almost white. It was one of the funniest things i’ve seen in along time. The gutters in the streets were white when he was done and a few hours later the grass was white again the gutters were bare. The thing i think is funny is he has a riding mover with a grass catcher that he cuts his grass with and if he might have used that he might have had better luck, to each thier own.

I will agree with a lot of folks that other trees are pretty messy too. But oaks are like natures candy store. Darn near every critter in the woods loves acorns. I’ll put up with oak tree mess to feed turkeys, deer, bear, grouse, etc. Cottonwoods as far as I can tell just make a big mess.

The fact that they reach 100 feet tall makes them good shade trees.
