Any folks catching eyes by drop-shot techniques? How about sharing some of your expertise(i.e. baits used, your successes, best conditions for this presentation, etc.)? I would like to hone my drop-shot skills this season. Thanks, I appreciate any/all responses!

    Jack,
This technique works well in heavy cover like weeds or cribs. Where legal, I like to subsitute the shot with a light jig tipped with plastic. On the hook above the jig I use either a leach or minnow. This is a quick way to find out which bait the fish prefer and lets you concentrate on using one pole in snaggy situations.

Had some luck early last year up in the NW corner of Shaboshkung Bay by the POW-WOW area, 12′ of water in the weeds. It was too weedy to rig the area, hooks and bait kept getting fouled on the drag. Switched to a drop shot, 1/8 oz, with a Gamakatsu 1/0 circle hook, tied about 18″ up from the weight. Had leeches and rainbows, but nose hooked crawlers was what they wanted. It was overcast with light southwest winds, the lake wasn’t flat but it certainly wasn’t rolling. One thing I found with the drop shot is you don’t have to fish completely vertical, which can be tough to do in shallower water. Short casts can be just as effective. A soft rod is a must, and you can’t “set” the hook, it’s just a smooth lift with the circle hooks. If I ever get a calm day this summer I plan on drop shotting out on the flats, boat control is so important I just haven’t been able to make it work in the wind.
