What do people prefer for steering on these small motors?

Does it depend the type of system you fish? I have a tiller steer but have thought about a console steer.

    Just curious about your opinions.

    I fish rivers mostly.

In my opinion the remote steering or console steering set-ups react too slowly for anything other than open water trolling. For the river, I’d stick with the tiller steer.

Tiller steer for this guy. I like to have the hands on control. If I did a lot of open water trolling I would think highly about going to console steer. For the river I think you will be happpier with the set up you have now. You will have a better reaction time to keep your boat in position and direct contact with the speed control.

Thanks, that was kind of my thoughts…I love the tiller but never tried a Remote. I’m switching the new boat over to tiller before I pick it up but wanted to make sure I was doing it for the right reasons.

I have nothing more to add that James and Dustin didn’t already say except that I have both on my T8, bought as a tiller and added the $30 kit which allows throttle/gearshift from the front Captain’s chair (if desired). A simple rod with swivel ball joints hooks the motors together for steering. It is RARE that I use this setup, and when I do it hardly seems fun to keep sloshing the steering wheel around to make minor direction changes. Big open water might be the only time I’d consider doing this but for all river fishing, none of that stuff gets used and the tiller is my exclusive control. It’s just impossible to slide across current breaks, and structure, or clam beds with anything but a tiller steer kicker. What kind is your kicker?
