Drove by prescott today and saw one maybe two cars on the ice about 50-100 yards away from open water!!!! How thick is the ice after being 40+ for 4 days??? Just looking out for fellow anglers and dont want to snag a car while fishing the croix this summer.

That is PROBABLY not very safe! I won’t even walk on the ice if I see open water within 20 feet.

Drove by there this afternoon. Somebody has a pretty large shack out there and the open water line is much much closer than it was a week ago!!! Don’t think I would like to retrieve those houses left there. Hopefully it will cool down again for them. I heard a guy say that a spot on Lake Pepin that was 16 inches a few days ago was down to 6 after this warm spell!!! Be careful! Moving water and warm wind don’t go well together!

There was a truck that went through the ice on thursday night,on lake pepin here in frontenac, I pulled my shack off tuesday everyone was giving me a hard time i just laughed and told’em i would’nt be driving out here, next day they all were out there again, and again on thursday ,they think because its “lake”pepin that theres no current.I should add that the ford ranger is in 25 fow, i figure if its there long enough should be some good structure for crappies..

Are these people that lazy, or that ignorant? In the 2003 pic, it looks like a short walk from shore. I am leaning towards lazy and ignorant! Not only reclessly endangering their lives, but those who would have to attemp a rescue should they go through.

In that 03′ pic, there actually was quite a bit ice, it looks pretty funny though..

I don’t know if this goes for the areas (and the river) out by you guys but out here in Waukesha County, the DNR will fine you each day that you don’t get your auto, 4 wheeler, shack, ect out of the water, and the recovering service is pretty expensive to boot.

I ice fished down in Prescott on Thursday night. I didn’t venture out as far as some, but where I set up I had 18″ of ice. I would guess I was 75 yards from the open water. On Saturday I had the boat out down in Prescott, no fish for the effort, but it was nice to take make the a ride from Hastings to Prescott again. I was driving by the edge of the ice in the boat chatting with the guy in the white fish house close to the open water. That would have made an interesting picture from shore.

I had the same thought Bub, but it would take a while for 18 gallons of unleaded, 5 quarts of oil, the tranny fluid to leak out killing everything down stream of it….before it would make good structure.

We have a similar area on the St Croix by the I-94 bridge. I’ve been out there twice…the first and the last. Although I went out with a fellow that was experianced, I still worry about others seeing this and thinking it’s safe for just anyone to walk out there…just anywhere.

Generally speaking it looks worse than it is as Ritt mentioned 18 inches of ice the day he was out there. But currant, the run off from warm days… and inexperiance leads to a large bill for recovery at best…a body bag at the worse. Fish just aren’t worth it. (yes, I said that out loud!)

I had 2.5′ of ice last week. The croix does not get the run off that the Sippi does. You don’t see a lot of fluctuation. I know the guys with the shack. They are on enough ice. I was fishing the day the two cars were parked out there, and I would not have parked there! It is a river, and conditions are always changing! It was a very Un-Smart move on their part. It may give others who see that, or someone following tracks the idea it is safe. It is not! If you stick the the used road, you will be safe, FOR NOW!
