For those of you who “Fish The River” in the winter…how do you keep rust from forming on your trailer and boat? It’s one of the reasons I don’t bring my boat out in the winter. It gets all that salt/road grime slop on it from driving there and back. Thanx

Since my boat/trailer isn’t a high dollar outfit, I never pay any attention to the grime it gets. Seems like it is usually pretty clean and I have never had a trailer fall to pieces yet from rust. Usually the grime gets washed off every time I put the boat in the water. I do however wish I had a travel cover to protect the inside though.

As soon as I have the time, I’m going to paint the entire trailer with bedliner. The road salt does reak havok on the trailer. My next winter beater will have a galvanized trailer!

Jon, Maybe you hit the nail on the head? Have 2 trailers. One for the winter and one for the summer. Kind of like getting a winter beater! I’d like to have my trailer Rhino lined, too. Very expensive, though. The new Ranger trailers are road armored. Maybe the next boat I get will have the trailer lined.

You can buy the Rhino lining stuff at Farm& Fleet and put it on yourself for less money. That stuff is awesome

I try to stay on top of the rust spots on the trailer in the summer. Sand it, prime it, and re shoot with gloss white. Seems to do the trick. If the trailer gets really bad, I’ll spray it off at a car wash, and let it dry at the in-laws heated work shop.

    mnfish,

I have the same problem with my Ranger trailer. Thats why I have a jon boat for this time of year…..
As for the care my trailer sees, a high pressure car wash as soon as applicable to get the majority of the salt and grime off. Picking the nice “clean road” days to fish are obviously something I care not to do. Car wash for me.

I recently re-painted the trailer on my big boat. What a pain in the butt! I wouldn’t recommend that project to anyone. However, I did put bedliner on all the cross beams and roller hardware. That seems like the ticket. It has only been on for a year, but it sure looks like it will hold up. My winter boat trailer will get the same treatment when I have time.

My next trailer will defiantly be galvanized.
