I am looking for info on lead core. I trolled some on the river last year and enjoyed it very much. Now it is time to try and get a little more serious about it.I am starting off by buying the book Precision Trolling. Is this a good move? I am mostly trolling for walleyes and would like to know – What to use for backing and how much. What do you prefer for lead core line? What are you using and how long of a leader line? What is your favorite trolling rod? Any help would be appreciated.

Precision Trolling is the Bible for controlled depth trolling. Good Start. I fish leadcore often. I prefer a segmented leadcore system. This entails sandwiching 3 colors of leadcore (17#/18#) between a 50’ mono leader (10#/12#) and enough mono backing (10#/12#) to fill the reel. You can put most any lure down to about 40’ depending on the length of line you let out and boat speed. Good line counter reels are quite valuable to get back to the fish zone once you locate it. Boat speed is a critical factor as explained in the Precision Trolling Manual. I use both St. Croix ( 8.6’ telescoping) and ugly stick rods( 6.6’). As far as leadcore goes, I have used several brands and all have worked well. I prefer a 17# or 18# leadcore line. Hope this helps.

Here is a link to the first of three articles written by Gary Parsons and Keith Kavajecz on the subject of trolling with lead core. Once you get there, you can surf the library to the other articles. VERY INFORMATIVE!! web page

Thanks a ton guys. The info is greatly appreciated. It helps to start off with some confidence. You both have provided me with that.
    Great luck on the water.
