Noticed this afternoon that my mutt’s favorite snow bank in the back yard has a bunch of bloody pizz stains on it. Other than that, he hasn’t shown any signs that he’s in pain. Eating and drinking fine. WTF??

I’m at the doggie ER right now… waiting for test results.

    Any ideas?

I don’t know if dogs get kidney stones that when passed can cause some short term dammage? Hope its benign, best of luck.

So far the doc seems to think either rat poisen or UTI.

I’m thinking he or she has a urinary track infection.
It could also be bladder stones.
Or let’s hope not but they could have got into rat poison.
Hope it’s the first one. Good luck and wish you two the best!!!

Rat poisons with hemoragics contain warfarin. A common test called pro time will give a blood thinner level. Hope its a simple uti.

My dog used to get crystals in his bladder. He now has a pee hole behind his penis bone that allows it to drain. He will still make pink pee once in a while, especially when he is a little dehydrated.

I hope it is something as simple as that and not the rat poisoning.

Observe the next urination as to when it is bloody. Beginning, all the way through, or at the end.
Beginning- check for cut on penis or injury to penis area
    All through- UTI or poison
    At the end- bladder stones
Blood clotting time longer than 2-3 minutes points to possible warfarin like castle rock said-Vitamin K3 injection
Simple x-ray for bladder stones-urinary acidifiers and antibiotics
Penis lesion heals on its own unless a tumor

450 bucks and four hours later… Its not rat poison.

Will take another trip or three to the vet if the antibiotic doesn’t clear this up. Sonigram only showed a large blood clot in the bladder and some abnormalities in the urethra, but nothing conclusive.

    This sucks.

    That does suck.

If I had one piece of advice for ya I would say call the U of M Vet Clinic for an appointment, pack up the pooch and hit the road. Those folks know their stuff like nobody else and in the end it will probably cost you less than messing around with your local vet. It’s like walking into the Mayo Clinic for small animals.

Just to let you know if you do go to the U of M you will be dropping a grand in the blink of an eye but they do know there stuff. Just didn’t want you to be in shock when you see the bill

A large blood clot in the bladder? That is odd. but then again I am no vet.

After a few surgeries there, I’m surprised my name is not on one of their buildings. But, my dog is alive and healthy.

I have told this story before, but I had an energency vet who wanted me to bring my dog to the U of M for his fractured vertebrae. I asked if there was another option, since we were looking at thousands of dollars. He said kennel confinement to limit his movement. I went with that option and Tuffy is none the worse for where and he doesn’t have hardware in his back.
